There is a famous quote attributed to various people including Mark Twain and Blaise Pascal. Wording varies, but the gist is: “Sorry for writing you a very long letter, I didn’t have time to write you a short one.” While it’s a witty comment, the humorous subversion of expectations doesn’t mean there isn’t an underlying truth. It takes work and/or brilliance to convincingly convey an idea in a few words. “A Christmas Carol” is an excellent example of a strong story that conveys its theme powerfully.

Ebenezer Scrooge is a cranky banker who doesn’t want anything to do with Christmas. He will not give his employee Bob Cratchit time off so that Cratchit can spend the holidays with his family, including his ailing son, Tiny Tim. He follows charities. He doesn’t even accept an invitation to his nephew Fred’s Christmas party.

Then one night he is visited by the ghost of his recently deceased business partner: Jacob Marley. Marley, who was as stingy and quarrelsome as Scrooge, is burdened with terrible chains, and the ghost warns Scrooge that unless the old man changes his ways, he too will end up wandering through eternity in similar chains. . Before Marley disappears, she tells Scrooge to expect three more ghosts to visit.

The three following visits to the famous spirits of Christmas past, present and future do not require much discussion. First of all, names of the ghosts (e.g. Ghost of Christmas Past) are self-explanatory. Second, this story is a pop culture icon and has been remade in every medium and in every imaginable way, from modern adaptations (e.g. “Scrooged”) to “Simpsons” episodes.

In any case, the first ghost shows Scrooge that once he wasn’t such a curmudgeon and reminds him that he once had an employer, the beloved Mr Fezziwig, who was far better to Scrooge than Scrooge was to Bob. . scratchit. The second ghost takes him to the Cratchits and their few but happy Christmas parties and then to his nephew’s party too. The final appearance, The Ghost of Christmas Future, brings Scrooge to the end of his own line. After the four ghost visits, Scrooge makes some changes to avoid the fate that befell him.

The Puffin Classics version I read has an introduction by Anthony Horowitz and some illustrations. Having said that, I don’t think it matters which version you read. It’s about the story.
