The book, which became an international bestseller, was adapted into a film by Tate Taylor, starring Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett and Justin Theroux.

The film was equally well received by audiences around the world as it reflected the complex narrative structure of the text and told the story from multiple points of view, mainly about women whose lives are in crisis. Hawkins’ protagonists are broken women dealing with significant personal challenges, including drug and alcohol addiction, troubled relationships, and troubled love lives.

In A Slow Fire Burning, the author reviews the themes and tropes that set her previous novels apart from most works in the genre. Once again, the reader meets a group of troubled women whose lives become intertwined after a gruesome murder occurs on a narrow boat moored in the canal.

Hawkins emphasizes the emotional state of the protagonists and their innermost thoughts, which are vividly expressed on the page. She also conveys their backstories in a slow and deliberate way that allows the reader to fully digest and understand the tangled relationships between them. Daniel Sutherland is stabbed to death on his own boat and his main suspect is none other than Laura, a young woman with a history of mental illness and family problems. Laura is believed to have been the last person to see Daniel alive, and she too was seen covered in blood on the day of the murder. Laura’s strange and uninhibited behavior makes things worse for her when the detectives investigating the case are convinced that she is to blame for it.

Daniel’s neighbor, Miriam, is a nondescript middle-aged woman who harbors a dark secret from her past and is also the person who discovers her body. Miriam finds Laura’s key at the crime scene and keeps it for herself without notifying the authorities. It is obvious that she has a plan, but the reader does not know what her true intentions are.

Carla Myers is Daniel’s aunt, her mother Angela’s sister, and she is devastated to hear the news of her nephew’s death. Carla and Angela have shared a strained relationship since the tragic death of Carla’s three-year-old son at Angela’s home fifteen years ago. Carla and her husband Theo de Ella accused Angela of negligence that led to the death of her offspring, and since then neither has been able to forgive her. Angela, then struggling with alcoholism, was also found dead in a suspicious domestic accident a few weeks before Daniel’s murder. Was it really an accident or was someone else at fault?

The deaths of Daniel and Angela represent the great mysteries of the novel, but there are also subplots that are just as enigmatic and intriguing. As the story unfolds, the reader has time to speculate on the possible culprit, although each time we have to adapt our theories to new standards imposed by new information and the many twists and turns in the plot. Unlike The Girl on the Train, the narrative this time around is linear with some excerpts where we read excerpts from Theo’s popular crime novel The One Who Got Away. The importance of these parts is only made clear in the last pages of the novel.

Overall I found A Slow Fire Burning easy to read and very entertaining, although on the negative side I was expecting a bit more from the ending. It is, however, a book that will most likely be chosen for adaptation into another film, as it has a cinematic feel to it, much of it related to the well-realized characters and the rapid pace at which it unfolds. Personally, I liked The Girl on the Train better, perhaps because of my penchant for unconventional narrative styles.

Regardless, it’s an entertaining read and you won’t regret buying it, especially if you’re a fan of Gillian Flynn and Liane Moriarty’s novels. I will definitely keep my eyes peeled for future posts from Paula Hawkins, as she is a fearless crime writer with a deep understanding of female psychology.
