Now his arm is broken, his B&B is understaffed, and the dangerously unpredictable Eve floats around trying to help. It wasn’t long before she infiltrated his work, kitchen, and guest room. Jacob hates everything about it. Or rather, it should. Sunny and chaotic Eve is her natural nemesis, but the more time these two foes spend together, the more their animosity turns elsewhere. As with Eva, there’s no ignoring the heat between them… and it melts Jacob’s icy exterior.

In general, one of my favorite things about Talia Hibbert’s books is that her heroes are always cinnamon rolls. But not Jacob. But I absolutely adore it anyway, and it might even be my favorite (shhhh…don’t tell Red).

This story follows Eve, Brown’s younger sister and a perpetual failure. After an argument with her parents, Eve flees to the country and, on a whim, applies to become a cook at Jacob’s Bed & Breakfast. However, Jacob does not approve of whims, and although he is charmed by Eva (mostly against her will), he rejects her, despite being in a great dilemma himself. After some pressure from his best friend, Jacob prepares to put Eve through a test. But before he can tell her, she runs him over with her car. Eve is then assigned to stay behind to help Jacob recover.

I will admit that I had a little trouble with this book at first. I understand it’s meant to be a bit silly and funny, but I really didn’t find Eve’s (or even Mont’s, to be honest) reaction to literally hitting Jacob with her car that funny. But he quickly won me over because despite that bumpy start and after some interactions between the two, I couldn’t help but root for them.

This romance has it all. It has forced closeness, enemies for lovers, and grumpy/sunny tropes. Also, a wonderfully diverse cast. Eve is black and plus size and Jacob is autistic. And I loved all the conversations about how they move around the world and what that means to them. Also, Eve’s realization that she may be autistic and how that makes her feel was really wonderful to read as someone who later in life also realized that she is neurodivergent. And can we take a moment to talk about tension? Because Holy Batman, the tension between these two is palpable. These are two wonderfully complex characters that totally deserve their HEA.

Three thoughts:

1. I really would have liked a confrontation scene where she fingers her pathetic friends for being completely horrible towards her.
2. I was a little surprised at how Eve’s family acted towards her given my impression of her in the Chloe and Dani books, but it made sense for the story and I appreciate the way the conflict was resolved , very.
3. Jacob taking notes in the epilogue was 100% spot on.

This was a delight from start to finish. And I’m so excited that we’re getting a spinoff series starring Mont and her twin sisters (and that one of the twins’ books is apparently going to be sapphic! ahhh!). Talia Hibbert can’t be wrong and I will read everything she posts.
