“The word ‘love’ is most often defined as a noun, but we’d all love it more if we used it as a verb,” writes Bell Hooks, coming out of All About Love struggling and burning. Here, in her most provocative and intensely personal form, the renowned academic, cultural critic, and feminist bellboy offers a proactive new ethic for a heartbreak-free society—not a lack of romance, but a lack of caring, compassion, and unity. People are divided, he explains, because society has failed to provide a model for learning to love.

When Bell Hooks uses his sharp mind to explore the question “What is love?” His answers touched both the mind and also the heart.

It shatters the cultural paradigm that ideal love is imbued with sex and desire, and offers a new path to love that is sacred, redemptive, and healing for individuals and a nation. The Utne Reader Bell Hooks one of the “100 Visionaries Who really Can Change Your Life”. All About Love is a powerful and timely affirmation of just how profoundly its revelations can change hearts and minds for the better.

Don’t let the title fool you. This isn’t just a book about romantic love. It presents a new paradigm for all types of love, from self-love to family, friendship, children, spouse and all loves in between.

Bell Hooks was an author, teacher, feminist and social activist. Best known for her work on race, culture and gender, she believed that our individual and collective dysfunction stemmed from a lack of love. In order to fundamentally heal the open wound in our hearts and in our societies, we must adopt a new approach based on love.

As long as we continue to accept patriarchy, power politics, corruption and consumerism, the dangerous path we are on as a civilization and the despair we feel as human beings will not end. We must remain open, available and guided by love, not only in thought but also in action.

Not everyone will like this book. You must be prepared to hear his message. But if you are, it will strike a chord. Do you have a list of promotions? no Will your life change overnight? no But it’s thought-provoking and a great first step.

I try to play with the genre of books I read, and non-fiction is a genre I’ve just started reading. And this book is a great non-fiction book. It’s honest and full of ideas, thoughts and feelings that many people (including me) have but can’t necessarily put into words.

There were times when the book got a bit repetitive, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing (since it emphasized and highlighted the subject matter she was trying to present), but I found it a bit tiresome.

Overall, this book is a wonderful read. In today’s world where we define love and all our expectations that come with it as subjective and immeasurable as opposed to power, money and status, All About Love serves to question its subjectivity and how it makes subjectivity so difficult . make people feel loved.

Most importantly, this book raised some important questions that I would not have even thought to ask, such as “Is caring and feeling cared for the same as loving and feeling loved?”
Bella Hooks also does a great job of addressing sexism in our society today and the impact it has on people.
This book is thought provoking and insightful and is a “Let’s Feel Better As Individuals and Members of a Society” read!

Overall it was worth reading. Although the book is 16 years old since its publication, it still addresses many of the issues facing our American culture today. But this book blames many of our culture’s problems on greed fueled by capitalism. It’s time to blame greed. There are also other compulsions, like gluttony, that feed selfishness. But we must know the personal causes of greed and gluttony. I found these answers while studying Enneagram personality studies. I wish more US leaders knew the real causes so they can find real solutions that address the causes, not just the symptoms.
