City of Lost Souls: A Review of the Fifth Book in the Mortal Instruments Series

The Mortal Instruments series has a lot of potential, but it is not without its flaws. The storyline is intriguing, but the characters can be frustratingly unbearable at times. However, City of Lost Souls, the fifth book in the series, has some redeeming qualities that make it worth reading.

The book starts with a sense of urgency as our heroes, Clary and Jace, try to find Jace’s long-lost brother, Sebastian. They soon discover that Jace and Sebastian have been bound together by a dark ceremony, which means Jace is no longer himself. The plot then follows our heroes as they try to save Jace and stop Sebastian from carrying out his evil plans.

Although the book has less action than previous instalments, it more than makes up for it in character development. We see a more human side of Sebastian, which makes us question just how much the demon blood has affected him. His interactions with Jace are particularly interesting, and we see a range of emotions from him, which adds some depth to his character.

The other characters also get their time to shine, with Izzy being both strong and determined, and fragile, insecure, and hurt. Simon is struggling with his new vampire abilities and who he is now. Alec and Magnus’s relationship is wonderfully developed in this book, and we see them struggle with magical and mundane issues that come between them.

Despite the development of the other characters, there are some problematic relationships in this book. The relationship between Maia and Kyle is frustrating, and the message it sends about domestic violence is concerning. The incest storyline is also an issue, as we already had the Clary/Jace are they/aren’t they storyline. Adding the Sebastian/Jonathan storyline was unnecessary, and the sexual threat to Clary was uncomfortable.

Despite these issues, the book is still an enjoyable read. The ending packs a punch, and we are left wondering how our heroes will stop Sebastian. Although not the most well-written of Clare’s three series, it still has enough intrigue and excitement to make it a worthwhile read.

In conclusion, City of Lost Souls is an interesting addition to the Mortal Instruments series. The character development is excellent, but some relationships are problematic. The ending sets up the final book in the series perfectly and leaves us eager to see how it all ends.
