I read my first Nicholas Sparks book many years ago and when I was offered the chance to read Dreamland I jumped at it. I was intrigued by the story with her romantic setting on the beach where Colby meets Morgan, and I was intrigued by Beverly’s story of escaping an abusive relationship with her young son. She had no idea how their lives would intersect, making the urgency with which she read frantic and nonstop. The characters told their own stories as they ventured into new places where they could start anew, pursue a dream they once forgot, and use their God-given talents to entertain the world.

The differences between Colby and Morgan made them special, and their talents made them a formidable team. Colby thought Morgan was larger than life and she was fascinated by the stories about her farm. They were genuinely interested in knowing everything about each other because they knew that time was not on their side. Romantic feelings washed over Colby and Morgan, which they turned into beautiful melodies and soulful lyrics. He could only hope that this lovely couple would somehow find a way to always be together.

My heart ached for Beverly as she crossed the country with her son to get as far away from her past life as possible. She traveled light, planned her route and found a way to blend in with the crowd while she constantly looked over her shoulder. I’m sure that for once in her life she had dreams of her own, but for now all she could do was hope that her past never caught up with her. Protecting her child was her number one priority and every afternoon as she waited for the school bus, she wondered if they would ever be truly happy again.

Since I was almost done with the book, I wondered again what Colby, Morgan, and Beverly might have in common. I wasn’t prepared for the answer to my question and the twists and turns at the end took me completely by surprise.

Dreamland has two intriguing stories, one revolving around Colby, a young man who runs his family’s farm but loves music and acting and takes a break from the farm to accept a short engagement to work in St. Petersburg, Florida. to sing and act. There he meets Morgan, who also aspires to a career in music. The other story revolves around the Beverly, a woman fleeing from an abusive marriage with her dear young son.

The book alternates between the two as Colby and Morgan grow closer and Beverly finds danger at every turn. As the story unfolds, the two stories merge in the most unexpected way into a very compelling and unusual ending that was a complete surprise. The book had all the suspense of a top-tier crime thriller, plus it’s a wonderful, hopeful romance. I really enjoyed it!
