RATING: I haven’t read such a good book in a long time! I actually got this at the bookstore in early March, returned it, and got Follow Me and The Hunting Party instead. Ever since I made this I’ve kept seeing Eight Perfect Murders popping up everywhere and lots of bookstagrammers raving about how good it is, so I gave in and bought a copy. If you don’t currently own this book, stop what you’re doing and buy it. If you have it, but haven’t read it yet, stop what you’re doing and binge read!

I absolutely could not put this book down. I definitely could have finished this in less than a day but #momlife and I read it in two days instead. It was hit or miss the whole time and I love how it all worked out in the end. Speaking of the ending, no spoilers here, but gosh, I was actually really surprised at how it ended.

The book, set in Boston, also has a lot of ties to Maine, where I’m from, so it was great that the characters found their way to areas of Maine that I’ve visited before. I really couldn’t stop thinking about this book and how I had to finish it ASAP! I read it every chance I got. Another cool but small thing that I liked is that each chapter started on the right side. I’m not sure if all Peter Swanson’s books are like this, but I liked that touch.

Peter Swanson has created another compulsive thriller with layer upon layer of suspense, you just can’t help but be hooked! I think I inhaled it in almost a day.

Malcolm Kershaw is a widower and owner of Old Devils Bookstore in Boston, a store specializing in mystery fiction. But when Gwen Mulvey (FBI) contacts him about several murders, he realizes they may have something to do with a blog post he wrote a few years ago. Devastated, he embarks on a dangerous path and realizes that he may be related to one of the victims and could be next.

Research with Gwen raised some questions for me. On the one hand, her closeness to him was dubious and rather unconventional, and I wondered who Gwen really was. Second, you have to assume that she targeted him for the murders committed in the eight different books on her list. Agatha Christie’s ABC Murders, Patricia Highsmith’s Strangers on a Train, Ira Levin’s Death Trap, A.A. Milne, Anthony Berkeley Cox’s Malice Aforethought, James M. Cain’s Double Indemnity, John D. Macdonald’s The Drowner, and Donna Tartt’s A Secret History.

Written from Malcolm’s point of view, the book is definitely a character to enjoy, immersing us in his intricate mind and the outrageous coincidence that forms Eight Perfect Murders. As he reveals more and more about the plots of the books to Gwen, he realizes that she is looking at him as a possible suspect. As more and more murders are committed by someone they call “Charlie” repeating the narratives, it becomes crucial for Malcolm to identify the killer.

The development of her late wife, Claire Mallory, is not only touching but tragic, especially given her struggles and subsequent need to watch over her. He could feel her pain. As more is revealed towards the end, I enjoyed the corkscrew of fooling places and people I never suspected.

I would definitely recommend this book for its tantalizing clues and surprising revelations. An homage to Hitchcock, it brings just the right amount of suspicion and obsession to set the plot in motion. Unlike many books that don’t live up to the hype, this one delivers on its promise. If you’re obsessed with crime fiction like I am, you simply can’t miss Peter Swanson’s book.
