Angela Marsons has given us the story we’ve been waiting for in this incredible prequel to the Kim Stone series. This is the brainchild of Kim Stone, the Kim we love and follow throughout the series. This Kim is the one we saw in the first books: she hates interacting with people, she moves from ward to ward because she’s too impatient to get along with others, she’s only comfortable when she’s on her Motorbike works, to the point where whoever forgets to eat (how I hate that, I’ve never forgotten a meal in my life), work non-stop until I solve a case.
Here she is (again) reassigned to a different station and given a new set of officers to work with: novice Stacey, who finds her strength in computer research, Bryant, steadfast and constantly supportive (and the slowest driver in town) , and Dawson, who is dealing with a personal crisis that is distracting him so much from work that he could be kicked off the team. And Woody, her boss on the station, who we learn requested her and whom Kim doesn’t recognize when he arrives.
As wonderful as the prequels are, and as satisfying as it is to see the formation of the team we’ve come to love, those of us who’ve enjoyed the entire series know what’s about to happen, which makes this book bittersweet, and for me there was a sadness. over much of the story.
The case the team is assigned to is a series of horrifying tortures and murders, and the investigation takes the reader in many directions. I thought I had discovered the killer and the motive, but I was wrong on at least one point.
There’s always something to learn from a book by Angela Marsons – now I know the meaning of many prison and gang tattoos (something that will come in handy next time I meet a guy with a tattoo – no need to google it to find it ) . know if he was in the Big House or was a member of the Bloods or Crips). There are other interesting facts we learn as we go on, things that clear up the case, but I won’t spoil it for the reader.
Suffice it to say, I’m starting to suspect that Angela is hiding Marson’s depths!
There’s another mystery that weaves through the book, leading to an absolutely amazing twist at the end, another hallmark of a Kim Stone book.
This book will make you love Kim Stone more than ever. We get more of his backstory and it can only break your heart. Heartwarming because we know what fate awaits the team, happy because in future books we’ll see how far Kim goes, going from a lonely, Christmas-hating woman who won’t even shake a colleague’s hand to a compassionate, brilliant one , loyal friend and true leader – and who can give her heart to a rescue dog, who in turn saves her.
This is a standalone book, but if you haven’t already, read the books in order; he will be even poorer if he doesn’t.
Thank you Angela Marsons for this unexpected gift from First Blood and we look forward to the next installment in this fabulous series.
