From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home PDF is the story of Tembi Lockes. She may know her name from television, movies, and Ted talks. She is both an actress and an advocate for comfort in times of illness and bereavement. I initially picked up this book for the stage in Italy. I like to read books that are set in places I travel to and we are going there this year. From the very first pages, I realized that this book has more to offer me than just a glimpse of the places I am about to visit.

While working in Florence, Tembi met, fell in love with, and married Saro, an Italian chef. Saro and his family taught him about food. Food from the fertile land, homemade tomato sauce, freshly made pasta, eggplant parmesan, olive oil from olives grown on the family’s land, lemons, aromatic herbs and much more. Her love story is deep as it took place between Los Angeles, where Tembi worked as an actress, and Sicily, where Saro was born, raised and worked as a chef.

Saro’s traditional Sicilian family was unhappy with her marrying a black American woman and early in her marriage she separated from them. After Saro was diagnosed with cancer, her family came back into her life. They also began to accept Tembi and her adopted child, Zoela.

After Saro’s death, Tembi finds solace by traveling back to Sicily with Zoela during the summer months. The book narrates 3 summer. She forms a special bond with her mother-in-law, Nonna, as they go through the grieving process. Grieving the death of a man is something I’ve been through in my life. I was able to identify with Tembi as she wrote about her condition. I could remember the pain I had to endure.

I loved that many of the sentences were written in Italian and by reading in context I was able to understand the meaning. That was brilliant. Memories contain recipes taught by Nonna Tembi for cooking. In these recipes, Tembi finds that the healing power of the food and also the family.

From Scratch is a beautiful story of deep love, the taste of food, and the wrenching pain that follows when you lose a spouse. It is also the story of Tempi’s strength as she walks through the mist of pain into the light of new beginnings.

“In Sicily, the literally every story really begins with a marriage or the death. In my case it is both. And so it was that I drove my only rusty Fiat down a winding country road on the outskirts of Alimunusa, a small Sicilian town, with my husband’s ashes in a small wooden box between my legs.”

Thus begins the beautiful love story of author and actress Tembi Locke with Saro, a Sicilian chef from a traditional family. Divided into four main parts as a complete menu, the book tells how Tembi and Saro met, fell in love, and lived through the heartbreaking estrangement from Saro’s family, who did not immediately accept Tembi, a black American, as his wife. . But there is a second, and possibly more significant, love story in these memoirs, when Tembi returns to Italy to be nurtured, figuratively and literally, by her mother-in-law after Saro’s death.

Every word in this book is thoughtful and lyrical, and the images Tembi conjures up are magical. Having never been to Sicily, I googled photos of Alimunusa. I found that the results were exactly the pictures her words painted in my head! The places and people in this book will stay with me for a long time!

Tembi meets Saro while studying abroad in Italy. Their relationship quickly blossoms and their epic love story begins on the streets of Florence. In Los Angeles they lead a life together. It is clouded by the knowledge that Saro’s parents do not support her marriage to Tembi, a black American. Saro’s rare cancer diagnosis is the beginning of the end. When he dies, Tembi must learn to survive, for her and her daughter. The unexpected comforts of Saro’s Sicilian hometown, her mother, and her authentic cuisine help navigate the pain and tremendous possibilities of life after Saro.

This book is amazing, so heartbreaking and beautifully written. The structure is exceptionally dynamic and the stories of Locke’s life are exceptionally interesting. Books that make me cry are my favorites and this one made me cry. In particular, Locke’s descriptions of Saro’s last days took my breath away. A very compelling theme, belonging, runs throughout the novel. Neither Tembi nor her daughter are white or Sicilian, so they stick out like a sore thumb when they visit.

Do they belong to Sicily or to this family when Saro leaves to fill the void? Locke also plays around with the connection between food, comfort, and growth: he welcomes guests, heals sadness, and nourishes the body like nothing else. Deeply symbolic and equally delicious, I love that aspect of the book. From Scratch is such a special memory. Beautifully written and exceptionally heartbreaking, I think it will touch your heart as it did mine.
