I’m done juggling dead end jobs and unemployed friends. It’s time to achieve my goal of owning a hotel and cement my friendship with my former best friend, Jack Colson. He’s a great investor and I’m going to need one. The nailing hardly comes to mind.

In fact, it might fix my life, especially when I get the deep (and profoundly weird) discount of staying an entire weekend in my dream property. It’s hard not to fall in love with the place. Though he could do without the creepy doll that lives there, the sounds Jack insists on are raccoons and the creepy abandoned hotel that would need an even creepier amount of money to renovate.

The worst thing is that I’m falling in love with Jack again. He will never invest if he finds out I have feelings for him. But as we work our way through the ghosts of past troubles, we need to figure out if the property is infested with rodents or something else that’s hopping around at night.

Happily Haunted Afters is a creepy, spooky indie small-town romantic comedy with a guaranteed happy ending.

I really liked the haunted hotel story and I liked Emma, but Jack had to grow on me. Emma is a free spirit and the kind of person that took a little longer to figure out what she wanted to do with her life (like most of us), she finally found what she called for and decided to do it. This is where Jack comes in, they were best friends who hadn’t spoken to each other for 5 years due to misunderstandings and a lot of stubbornness on both sides. Emma enlisted Jack’s help in financing the hotel purchase. Jack works for an investment firm.

Jack is more reserved and seems cold at first. I’ll be honest and say that Jack bothered me about what he was planning to do with Emma for a good part of the book. He finally realizes how much Emma means to him and works to prove it.

I didn’t care about Lena, Emma’s sister either, as she seemed more supportive of Jack than her own sister.

Happily Haunted Afters follows our protagonist Emma as she waits to buy and renovate a hotel in a small town that is believed to be haunted. Things get complicated for Emma when she involves Jack, her old friend and crush, and tries to convince him to invest in her business.

I have found that I really enjoy this book. It’s a sweet and cute rom-com that’s perfect for fall with its haunted house vibes. The plot is easy to follow and I found Emma and Jack and their long history together to be quite complex and developed at the end. The two points of view of Emma and Jack were well written and the different voices of the two characters made it feel like talking to a friend. All in all, if you’re looking for a fun and cute fall rom-com read, I highly recommend this one!

Happily Haunted Afters is a book that made me laugh. Written with impeccable attention to voice and detail, Kelley’s book drew me into the story from page one and I stayed up too late to continue reading not only for the well written story but also for the world and life of Emma experience and Jack through their eyes and words.

If you’re the kind of person who wants great dialogue, both internally and between characters, this is definitely the book for you. Reading this book was like a wonderful conversation with a friend whom you haven’t seen in a long time and who you never thought you would miss so much.

I hope this is the first book in a series as Kelly did a great job in fleshing out the supporting characters and making each one a unique part of this story. Like all people, there are some you like more than others, but overall I’m looking forward to seeing the bar grow and learning more from Jack’s friends.

Overall, this is a well-written book, with enough spice and sexual tension to keep the nights warm, but not so much that the sex overwhelms the writing. This isn’t a behind-closed-door romance, but the behind-closed-door scenes are tastefully done and add to the story of Jack and Emma’s growing realization that this relationship is both necessary and inevitable.
