Franny Doyle’s day only gets worse when she gets fired from her job and then gets tricked out of her favorite dress on the subway, showing off a lot of Manhattan in the process. Fortunately, an undeniably handsome stranger comes to her aid with her suit jacket; Unfortunately, he quickly runs away from her at the next subway station.
Things only get worse when it turns out that this entire scene was posted on social media in real time, securing Franny and Hayes Montgomery III as a romantic love match. Franny and Hayes couldn’t be more opposite. She is creative and energetic, while he is a serious and calm businessman, and they are both fine if they never have to see each other again.
But somehow the town is a small place and Hayes and Franny keep seeing each other, long enough to realize that they really do enjoy each other’s company. Until Franny’s life hits another roadblock and her insecurities overwhelm her, making her decide if she can trust herself enough to achieve what she really wants.
I think this book was more of a love letter to New York City than anything else, but it freaked me out and made me look crazy on some of my daily runs. I loved the humor and playfulness of this story. Hayes’s discomfort, despite the fact that she seemed to have everything under control, was very understandable and a good reminder to laugh at yourself from time to time.
Franny’s initial judgment of him as cocky or arrogant when in reality he was just shy and socially awkward is the story of my life, and I relate a lot to Hayes in it. Then again, that very element made me a little prone to disliking Franny just because she didn’t really give it a chance. Although much of this was due to her own insecurities, it took me too long. Even after they were honest with each other and Hayes went out of his way and did amazingly good things for her, she was still quick to punch him in the face when the going got tough.
I appreciated that she got up to fix the things she broke, but I just wish she hadn’t taken so long to do it. Overall, I wanted Hayes and Franny to have more time together with that good open communication and they only really got two good scenes out, although to be fair one was pretty long. Otherwise I found Hayes adorable and now I want to visit New York. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to laugh in the style of a romantic comedy, especially the audiobook version, as the narration of humor was perfect in this book.
