Piper Bellinger is fashionable, influential, and her wild-child reputation means she’s constantly stepped on by the paparazzi. When excess champagne and a runaway rooftop party land Piper in jail, her stepdad decides enough is enough for her. So he cuts her off and sends Piper and her sister to take on the responsibility of running her late father’s bar…in Washington.
Piper is less than five minutes away in Westport when she meets tall, bearded Captain Brendan, who thinks he won’t survive a week away from Beverly Hills.
What if Piper can’t do math and the thought of sleeping in a dirty apartment with bunk beds gives her hives? How bad could it really be? She’s determined to show her stepdad, and the handsome, moody local boy, that she has more than just a pretty face.
Except it’s a small town and she sees Brendan everywhere. The fun-loving socialite and the rugged fisherman are polar opposites, but an undeniable attraction simmers between them. Piper doesn’t want distractions, especially feelings for a man who’s been sailing off into the sunset for weeks. But as she reconnects with her past and feels at home in Westport, Piper begins to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she’s known is really what she wants. Los Angeles calls her by her name, but Brendan, and this city of memories, may have already won her heart.

For me, this book was PERFECT! I loved everything about it and found it absolutely bubbly and magical. Can’t wait for Volume 2!!
Piper Bellinger is a rich party girl famous on Instagram. Her stepfather works in Hollywood and they gave her everything she could want. She has no job, life goals or aspirations. Her “friends of hers” tend to be semi-friendly acquaintances, and she has never been in a romantic relationship for more than 3 weeks. When another guy dumps her, not least in public, she’s despondent.
So she decides to do something outrageous to distract everyone from her humiliation and it’s amazing until he ends up in jail. By morning her stepfather has had enough of her and she banishes her for 3 months to the small fishing town of Westport, Washington, the birthplace of Piper and her sister Hannah and her parents.
Brendan Taggart is the captain of a shrimping boat. He has lived in Westport all his life and has no plans to change. He is a widower and his wife left 7 years ago, but he hasn’t really moved on. He likes things with plans and routines, and he confidently navigates this path, both at home and on the ocean. Until the Bellinger sisters come to town and blow up their perfectly ordered existence.
Brendan and Piper had incredible chemistry and sparks flew between them from the start, even when they argued. Piper feels vulnerable because she has no idea what she is doing. She has never had to cook, clean or shop, and she is a mess. Although she is down to earth, Hannah is still almost hopeless, so she is no help. Also, Piper feels insecure being in Westport since her mother left town with the girls when they were little after her father’s death and never returned.
Piper only has vague memories of her father, but he’s a fallen hero in this town, so it’s hard to reconcile that in her head. Brendan also has ghosts in town, as his in-laws are still pretending his daughter died yesterday, and Brendan feels disrespected when he thinks about finally moving on. They both had a lot of internal and external issues that they had to deal with individually before they could even consider doing things as a couple.
Hannah was a wonderful supporting character here. She and Piper have a close sisterly bond and I loved their connection. Fox, as Brendan’s right-hand man on the ship, was another great character and I can’t wait to see them fall stupidly in love in the next book. Fox is quite a womanizer and it’s always a pleasure to see a player on their knees! Many other fun and interesting people in Westport were lovely as well. I fell in love with the city together with Piper!
But Piper and Brendan were the stars of the show here and what an amazing story they had. They both learned a lot about themselves and what their lives should be like. They had to work together to achieve this and I admired their bond. Neither of them had such a connection before, and they were both at a bit of a loss as to how to handle it. But seeing them stumble and fall and get back up and try again was inspiring. Piper, in particular, became so much the person that she was meant to be. Her journey was so sweet, sometimes silly, but mostly serious and beautiful.
This is the type of high I am constantly chasing. The guy with all the feelings and butterflies. The kind that makes my heart sit up and pay attention, beat and flutter and create the most delicious pain in my chest. The kind of book I want to read forever because I am so effortlessly and desperately in love with the characters and their rich and intimate relationship.
It happened one summer it was pure gold.
I can’t even express how much I loved this book. I was instantly hooked, drawn to Piper’s exuberant charm. I’m a huge fan of Schitt’s Creek and was a bit worried about how a character loosely based on Alexis would translate here. But it was perfection. Tessa Bailey perfectly captured the depth that lay beneath Piper’s flat, airy appearance. The story perfectly captured the sweetness of her heart. Even the insecure ten of hers were written to be relatable and lovable and, frankly, impossible not to love.
And Brenda? Holy Hannah, folks, you’re not ready for the awesomeness that Brendan was. I honestly think he might be one of my favorite love heroes of all time. The sea captain was so manly and manly. He was gruff and growling in a way that I love, and completely overwhelmed by his feelings for Piper in a way.so I love even more. She loved her firm and sincere heart. I loved the tamed alpha vibe of it. HE was everything I love about romantic heroes.
The chemistry between these two was absolutely fiery. Page after page sparkled and sizzled, leaving me hungry for more as I gorged myself on the perfection of their romance. It was sinfully sexy, but somehow done in a way that added depth to the romance. I keep throwing the word “perfect” around, but honestly, that’s how I felt about a lot of parts of this book.
