Grace and Ryan have been married for six months and were planning to go on their honeymoon on their first anniversary since money is tight! Out of the blue, Ryan surprises Grace with this cabin in the woods that he found and thought would be the perfect getaway for her. Grace is worried, she’s not sure if she knows her husband well, but she’s finally excited.

Your first day is perfect! Until things are no more, starting with a note on her doormat that says, “She’s dead, you’re next.”

Ryan starts criticizing Grace, saying that she’s overreacting and that he doesn’t need to go to the police. What is Grace doing? She tells Ryan that she’s known her secret for a while and will keep it forever. Before they know it, things escalate and it’s clear that someone is after them. Ryan keeps his cool, but Grace panics. I mean, right?

I preface my opinion by saying that maybe it’s because I’m a heartless soldier who is uncomfortable with a very loving display of intimate feelings. I show my feelings more in actions than in words. Because of this, Ryan and some of the dialogue disappointed me; sometimes the conversations were one-dimensional, very loving, and it felt like one person wrote them all.

I can’t explain it well, but it’s as if the characters have their unique voice, a reader feels that the character speaks and not the author. he puts words in his mouth! I don’t want to disparage the author because overall I enjoyed reading this book. I think it’s a matter of the expectation and also the preference; I was expecting grittier, darker thriller. Just Married is an easier read (which isn’t bad) as if it could be a Hallmark movie. I think it would be great for Cozy Mysteries fans who want to start reading darker thrillers.

Now let’s get to the positive, okay? First of all, what a solid chapter! The suspense and suspense were also done very well throughout the book. Most importantly, Modglin played fair with his solution, which everyone should now know is my number one read for mysteries. The book was well put together, and aside from the dialogue in a few Ryan and Grace chapters, the writing was excellent. We have a third point of view in some chapters (like the first) and I felt that the strength of the author really shined through in them. I wish I could find more of this narrative style throughout the book.

Newlyweds is a fast-paced reading book that I think a lot of people will love.

JUST MARRIED book had that distinctive Kiersten Modglin voice, but there was something different. I’m used to his books being curvy and full of exciting moments, but this story was darker; the most deeply flawed and complex characters.

Ryan and Grace are newlyweds embarking on their belated honeymoon. Their secluded hideout soon turns into hell when they meet a strange man on a hiking trail. Ryan, eager to be helpful, gives the man groceries and supplies, but Grace is bewildered and wants to leave. Later, back at the cabin, a puzzling and increasingly terrifying series of events leads the pair to fight for their lives, each realizing that they both have secrets from the other.

What I love about Kiersten’s stories is that they follow the trademark of one of his favorite authors, Mark Edwards. Just like him, he puts ordinary people in dangerous situations. At just over 200 pages, you get realistic characters, an incredibly twisted plot, and a satisfying ending every time.
