Maybe it’s just me, but I had trouble getting into the story. In the beginning, each chapter is dedicated to completely different characters…too many characters…and it took a while for their stories to intersect enough to make sense of who was who and how their stories connected. The plot and all its overlapping parts are actually pretty clever and good, but I have to admit that I sometimes have a hard time keeping things and the characters straight. To complicate matters further, the timeframe between “then” and “now” also changed.

Still, some of the writing is excellent, and the author did an amazing job of developing such a complex plot. Then again, maybe it’s not the plot that’s complex; Perhaps it’s the convoluted way the plot is revealed that makes it seem more complicated than it is. I do not know. Some readers may be tempted to put the book down at first, but hang in there. Be patient and all will be revealed. The author throws in enough red herrings to keep you guessing.

The only part I didn’t particularly like was the ending to the conflict and the resolution, as if the author just wanted to finish the book. It seemed highly unlikely to me that there would be a detailed exchange of background information between the characters and the detective when lives were at stake. I mean, if someone I care about was in serious danger, I can’t imagine the detective asking me to “retell me your backstory”…and actually taking valuable time to tell him give. Talk to you later… Catch the bad guy NOW!

Overall, though, this is a pretty entertaining read. I don’t know if I would call it an “engrossing thriller” but it has its moments and is worth reading.

Little Alice is just eight years old when her father dies in an accident. Her mother doesn’t know how to take care of her. She meets a rich man and falls in love with him, who wants to marry her. They move into Paul’s house. Alice doesn’t take the decision well and discovers that she will have a brother and sister who are teenagers and weird. Alice is afraid of her brother Lucas! Her mother and Paul go out for the night and let Natasha stay with Alice, but Natasha gets caught up in a movie and doesn’t realize her brother is back until she hears him scream.

He finds him on the floor in Alice’s room with a pencil in his eye and his pants on the floor. Alice tries to tell Christina and Paul what happened, but no one believes her. Paul throws mother and daughter out of the house. Christina has never worked in her life and the only jobs she can get are in bars, casinos etc. She ends up into the prostituting herself and poor Alice has to watch this happen to her mother. You’re always moving from one bad situation to the next.

Robyn Carter has been on furlough from her job as the local detective inspector for over a year due to personal issues and is joining her cousin Ross as a private investigator. Work is getting boring so he talks to his old boss about going back to work. He just took on a case to find a missing man, Lucas Matthews. But this case is more like a police case than a private detective case. Robyn finds bodies that she’s sure are all connected in some way, but how? I enjoyed this book with all the twists and the turns and I think you will too.
