Decades ago, the tennis superstar Tom Pierce and the “It Girl” Mika Stowe met at a party.

Mike fell in love. Tom was already in love with his wife. As much as Tom wanted Mika as her friend, Mika knew that it would hurt her too much to be attracted to this amazing man and never be able to have him.

They parted ways for what they thought would be forever, only to reconnect just once when an unspeakable tragedy darkens Mika’s life.

Years later, the impossible happens.

There comes a time when both are separated.

But now Tom has made a terrible mistake. A mistake that devastates his loved ones so much that he feels it will never be fixed.

Mika has never forgotten how far and how fast she fell when she first met him, but Tom’s transgression prevents her from reaching him.

However, there are matchmakers in their midst.

And when conspiracy breaks out for this match, Tom and Mika find themselves embroiled in international intrigue pitting them against a sports industry giant.

Now they face one big struggle as they simultaneously navigate friendship, attraction, love, family, grief, redemption, two very different lives on two opposite sides of a continent, and a box full of kittens.

So there are really two sides to every story. And that sometimes even the guy who did something bad isn’t that bad. Characters who cheat and lie and are generally not good people are usually a hard no for me. But that changed for me after reading this series. And why I will explain later…

He adored Mika so much. This woman has been through some heartbreak and she is a strong, fierce, talented, wonderful woman and single mom. She raised an even-tempered and courageous daughter after losing her partner. She carried Tom Pierce in her heart but not in her life, as she met him 20 years ago when she was free and he was not. She gave up having a potentially wonderful boyfriend by her side to avoid upsetting her marriage and breaking her own heart.

Tom is much more than what readers have seen. We know that he is a talented and charming man who loves his children, will do anything for them and even somehow developed a positive friendship with her ex and her new husband. An ex she cheated on. And although that act is from a few years ago, it is still a factor. But he’s also a generous, kind, animal-loving guy…and one who acts out when things hurt others.

I love that Mika is giving her a chance, even though I think she just suspects that she cheated on her ex. Tom is never more than honest about this episode. Well, he admits it and blames himself for it, as well as the failure of his marriage. He just leaves out important details…like why he cheated. These two just click, in a way I’ve never seen the ex match.

I love her daughter Cadence so much and hope to hear her story one day! She’s a huge part of the story, as are all the supporting characters…from Tom’s kids Chloe (von, she’s so wacky), Sasha and Matt, to Mika’s friend Nora and her assistant. Teddy. Even her late partner Rollo contributes to her story.

Then there’s her ex Imogen. I didn’t like it in the previous books. I felt there was a bit of self-centeredness in her. And her behavior in this one tells me that she was right. I know some readers won’t like the way she portrays her character. I more than agree with that and sincerely hope that the happy little blended family is not so strong in the following stories. yes i hate her

I learned from reading Chasing Serenity, the second book in the series, before reading the first, After The Climb, that some characters are complex. And that their stories need to be told, even if they seem malicious. Or if they cheat/ And because my feelings about Corey Szabo were complex, I knew I had to at least give Tom a chance to prove to me that he wasn’t a lost cause.

So thank you KA for writing characters that are multifaceted and complex. We may not all like them, but I’m glad their stories are being told. Now for your next pair… I hope it’s not what I think it is! LOL
