Everyone was wondering about Shaye Archer’s past. Including Shaye.

Shaye Archer’s life practically began the night police found her in an alley, beaten and battered and with no recollection of the past fifteen years, not even her name. Nine years later, she is a licensed private investigator with a single goal: to find answers for her clients when they shouldn’t be there.

And maybe one day the answers for yourself.

Emma Frederick thought her nightmare was over when she killed her abusive husband, but someone is after her and haunts her with memories of her past. With no evidence to support her claims, the police dismiss them as PTSD, but Shaye is convinced that someone is deliberately terrorizing Emma…playing cat and mouse with a goal in mind.

To kill Emma.

Well, I’m happy to report that this is a gem. Better yet, it’s the first in a three-book series, so now I’m looking forward to reading two more.

The focus is on a private investigator in his 20s named Shaye Archer, who lives and works in New Orleans. She herself is a mystery; She was found horribly beaten and abused at the age of 15, adopted by a wealthy woman and counseled by a close friend of that woman, a highly competent psychiatrist. Despite this, she remembers absolutely nothing of her life until the moment when she appears to have escaped from her unknown captor. Hell, she doesn’t even know her real name, so she picked one (although where on the planet Shaye got her name is a total mystery to me; hey, she could turn out to be related to Frank Zappa or Gwyneth is Paltrow).

Even before she has furniture in her little office, she gets a client. Emma Frederick, a hospital nurse, is sure she has a malicious stalker, but without evidence, the police don’t take her complaints seriously. Worse yet, the stalker looks exactly like her ex-husband, even though he may not be; When he became violent and tried to kill her, she beat him to it: she killed him in what the police determined was her own defense.

Based in part on Shaye’s own experiences, she believes that Emma really is in danger, even though they both know that she cannot be her dead husband. But who could she be? As Shaye begins to dig deeper into her investigation, the stalker is clearly not happy; Suddenly, when people close to Shaye (and Shaye himself) become targets, the race begins to get to him before he gets to them.

Along the way, Shaye manages to get on the good side of a “good” cop, one who thinks Emma is really in danger but can’t do much because he’s stuck with a retiring partner who doesn’t have the most. minimal interest. in moving the ship – or, for that matter, doing real work. And here’s a big surprise: The nice guy is also handsome, single, and not far from Shaye’s age.

The plot moves quickly, and at times quite bloody for those who are sensitive to these things, until the end. Almost; I probably could have done without the last chapter which seems to have been added as an afterthought. However, he laid the groundwork for the next book in the series, and I’m certainly ready to pick up where this one left off. All in all, an impressive start!

Private detective Shae Archer is a woman with no memory of her past. She is 24 and currently she is setting up her own business with her newly acquired IP license. Her first suitcase comes through the door when she moves out.

Emma Frederick killed her abusive husband. The thing is, he haunts her now, leaving little memories of her past to haunt her. The police do not believe him. Everyone saw the body, the cremation. They attribute everything to her abusive and traumatic past. A co-worker who knows Shae treated her in the hospital when she was just 15 years old. Body beaten and mutilated. She recommends it to Emma. Tell her that Shae will believe her and take the case from her.

The ultimate goal of the stalkers? To kill Emma, but why?
The answers lie in the stalkers’ past and why Emma has to pay for the murder of her husband.

The book was well written with many twists and turns. It kept me guessing until the end. I didn’t learn much about Shae’s past, but it was just the first in the series. Exciting and a good page turner.
There is a lot of talk about abuse, but nothing in detail.
