I’ll start by saying that I really enjoyed Marrying Winterborne. I’m a big fan of Lisa Kleypas’ historical romances and this one definitely didn’t disappoint. To be honest, my happiness had more to do with Mr. Winterborne than with Lady Helen. I liked that Rhys is a straight shooter. what you see is what you get he is an ambitious man who is not afraid of hard work.

Yes, he is a bit bossy and demanding, but many successful people have to be to get what they want. Rhys is also extremely fair and he does not narrowly rule anyone out for a job because of their gender or race. If he is willing to work hard and prove himself to him, Rhys will support him 100%. Rhys Winterborne has worked his way up from the son of a grocer to the owner of a very wealthy department store.

He doesn’t like to be put down by his ordinary upbringing and he feels extremely unhappy when you attack his Welsh heritage. BUT… not all the money in the world has given him the behavior or education of a gentleman. For me, this is where he expresses the great appeal of him. We see a slight vulnerability. I love a strong, heroic, manly hero who has that touch of vulnerability that makes you want to hug him. If he’s also confident enough to admit when he’s wrong? I left.

We start Marrying Winterborne with Rhys receiving a very unlikely visitor. In Cold Hearted Rake, the first book in the series, we meet and see the beginning of a budding relationship between Rhys and Lady Helen Ravenel. Things don’t end well, and the end of Cold Hearted Rake marks the end of the couple’s two-week engagement. So this visitor, Lady Helen, is definitely a surprise for Rhys. Even more surprising is when he finds out that Helen wants to back out of her engagement. What follows are some honest truths revealed, a bit of negotiation and a bloody mess…defloration…compromise…defloration?!?!

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy… this is an extremely HOT book. Lisa Kleypas certainly provides us with a very steamy historical romance and she didn’t take long to get there either. We don’t have to wait for them to meet, woo, and then suddenly realize they should probably get married before she goes bankrupt, her names go in the trash, or they call someone. We cover all those pesky details in the first 25%… then it’s all fun and games… sort of… not really… Yeah bring the secret that needs to be kept or it’s all ruined…plot.

Marrying Winterborne was not a boring book. It caught my attention from start to finish. There was a bit of unnecessary drama when Helen Rhys kept a secret, but I guess if there wasn’t any fear in the plot, some people might feel unhappy or dissatisfied. I took a star off for that. Look, I knew Rhys would be the better man. I trusted him to do the right thing.

He was sure he loved Helen too much to wonder if they should be together or not. I loved that I never doubted Rhys Winterborne and even in my review of Cold Hearted Rake I knew his misdeeds were not a true representation of him. Once again, Rhys proved his worth by accepting that he made a mistake and apologizing when he messed up. Ahhh… my heart is pounding.

I really enjoyed Marrying Winterborne . That sneak peek at the end… I really missed those wallflowers. Makes you want to re-read the series.
