Family can be death for you…

Sabine LaVeche must quickly find a blood relative; your life depends on it.

Then Helena Henry shows up and offers to help, and Sabine knows she’s really in trouble, even though it’s the best idea she’s heard in a long time. When private detective Beau Villeneuve takes on Sabine’s case, things heat up in several ways as Sabine struggles to reconcile thoughts of life with Beau with her life chances.

As the investigation continues, they begin to uncover the mysteries of Sabine’s past, and one thing becomes clear: someone doesn’t want Sabine to get the answers she’s looking for.

I’m a big fan of author Jana Deleon’s cozy mysteries. This was no exception. The character of Sabine was introduced in book one of this series and I really liked it. Things take a turn for the worse for Sabine’s character in this story, and while she hasn’t been able to find family members for the past decade, she really needs to now. Sabine has had health issues in the past, but now she’s discovering that she’s not dealing with a scare but with something real and needs to find someone who is a genetic match for her.

In order to find a blood relative, Sabine takes the advice of the psychic Raissa Bordeaux and hires a private detective. Beau Villeneuve works as a private investigator but was once a federal agent whose background was finding missing persons. When he meets Sabine, he is immediately attracted to her, which scares him. Beau has a policy against relationships, especially when the woman is a client. Determined to keep things professional, he tries to keep his distance from Sabine, but since she appears to be the target of someone determined to end her life, Beau can’t help but take care of Sabine and takes risks about to lose her heart.

With the help of the woman who was once the most hated in all of Mudbug, now brave and supportive, if not a pain in the ass, the ghost Helena, Sabine and Beau must unravel the mystery of Sabine’s origins. All is not as it seems and the truths that come out will shake Sabine to the core. As time runs out, danger mounts and Sabine will face truths that are almost too terrible to comprehend and some truths that are more than she could have hoped for.

This was such a fun story to read! As always, there’s a bit of humour, sass and sarcasm, which is the perfect combination with a cozy romantic mystery and a light suspense. I feel like certain elements were introduced and not fully realized or executed during the story when they should have been. I also think that while the romance was sweet, there wasn’t anything intense about it that made the characters “hot” for each other. It almost felt like a compulsion to be happily ever after just to give the readers what they wanted. Overall though, I enjoyed this story and will continue with this series.

This book is easy and enjoyable to read. I was dying to know what Helena Henry would do next and what costumes she would wear. The story continues through three books and I highly recommend reading all three, this is the second together as it gives a nice flow to the stories which are all different. I left a long gap between the first one and this one and struggled a bit to remember the first story and characters.

You will definitely find it hard to put down this book as there are some very funny parts, the characters are sure to keep you entertained from start to finish.
