My One and Only Duke is the first book in Grace Burrows’ Rogues to Riches series, and it’s a historical romance with an element of mystery. There is the added bonus of a Christmas novel by Elizbeth Hoyt, Once Upon a Christmas Eve, which I will review separately.

I really enjoyed this book> It was wonderful and intriguing, with charming characters who mature and make the best of a situation that none of us expected.

This storyline was one of a kind, Quinn is a self-made who rose from childhood poverty and suffering to become one of the wealthiest bankers in London, with a few messy bumps along the way. Jane is pregnant and widowed, although her father refuses to acknowledge the connection, robbing his daughter of her reputation and forcing the girl to call herself a “bastard”. So they got married to save the future of Jane and the boy who faces the gallows but saves himself from the noose at the last second.

Now they must work together to build a life together and solve the mystery of who is Quinn’s enemy. Trust and affection slowly grow between them, but that made it even more realistic. The plot was interesting with a nice twist at the end that made me stay up late to read on.

My only criticism might be that I found the mystery to be a bit slow and seemed a bit drawn out and then solved pretty quickly, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I will definitely be reading more of this series and hope to see more of these characters.

I loved the hero in this book so much. This moderate and discreet hero is incredibly kind and responsible. I loved how he treated the heroine with respect and dignity.

THE STORY: Self-made banker Quinn Wentworth is framed for a murder he did not commit and sentenced to death by hanging. While awaiting his verdict, Quinn generously marries a woman he hardly knows. Jane Winston, a widow in desperate need, marries a doomed stranger to support her unborn child. But on the way to the gallows, Quinn is saved from death by the news that he has inherited a duchy. Now of course he has a wife too, Quinn and Jane must figure out if they can make their marriage a reality while Quinn searches for whoever framed him.

OPINION: I really thought this was a delightful book. The opening chapters before Quinn is saved from the gallows were quite beautiful in the way Quinn and Jane build a foundation for their marriage. Quinn’s friendliness can be seen.

What I particularly liked about this book was how these down-to-earth characters build a relationship based on mutual respect for one another. I couldn’t put this book down even though it’s a quieter book with no action packed plot. There are some exciting moments, but the focus of this book is these two strangers meeting each other.

Quinn in particular was a wonderful hero. We get to know his true characters very early in this book as he spends what he believes will be his last days on earth helping as many people as possible. She’s just adorable, so I wasn’t surprised at how kindly she treats the heroine in their marriage.

My only complaint is that I wanted to know what happened to Jane’s son. However, I hope that we will learn more in future books in the series. I think Quinn will be a wonderful father.

In fact, I had never read an entire Grace Burrowes book before. I picked this up after reading a related novel and I’m up anyway glad I did.
