Nine people meet in a remote tourist town. Some are here to lose weight, some are here to restart life, some are here for reasons they can’t even admit to themselves. Amidst all the luxury and pampering, mindfulness and meditation, they know that those ten days can mean real work. But none of them could have imagined how challenging the next upcoming ten days would be.

Frances Welty, the former best-selling romance novelist, arrives at Tranquillum House with a sore back, a broken heart, and an extremely painful paper cut. She immediately becomes very fascinated by her fellow guests.

Most of them don’t seem to have any need for a spa. But the person who intrigues her the most is the strange and charismatic owner/manager of Tranquillum House. Could this person really have the answers that Frances didn’t even know she was looking for? Should Frances put aside her doubts and immerse herself in all that Tranquillum House has to offer, or should she run while she can?

My thoughts:

As nine perfect strangers come together to meditate and deal with their emotional and physical stress, this reader felt that nothing good could come of this little retreat. After all, none of the guests really know the owner/manager of the resort, and that might be his biggest mistake.

Each guest presents the reader with a backstory, and despite our misgivings, we expect good things.

My favorite character was Frances, an author whose last book was rejected and whose love life definitely took a turn for the worse. She’s probably looking for something she won’t find here.

So many red flags fluttered around Masha, and the guests were amazed. But maybe they only see the authority he carries with him.

I’ve had this book since 2018, but now I’m eagerly devouring it due to the upcoming Hulu original series. I’m glad I read it.

As the story progresses, we learn more about each character, but less about Masha, and by the end we wish everyone had done more “due diligence.” A twisted story that left me with more questions than answers.

I am a fan of Liane Moriarty. I have previously read What Alice Forgot (my favorite of hers), Her Last Anniversary, Big Little Lies, Her Husband’s Secret, and Three Wishes. I was really looking forward to this latest release; Since I pre-ordered it, I hadn’t looked at the synopsis of the book for a while. I decided to just read the novel without looking at the reviews and not understanding much more than the general idea of nine people staying at a wellness retreat. With so little to do, it felt like The Game. I didn’t know what to expect or what it was for. He had only a vague idea that things would not be as they seemed.

I liked the structure of the chapters as each chapter was dedicated to one character’s thoughts. If I hadn’t read Liane first, I’m not sure what my thoughts would have been. I like the author’s writing style, so I had no problem following the story, even when I wasn’t sure where the journey was going. Reading this I had sensations of a distorted Willy Wonka and chocolate factory with shades of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Take this for what it’s worth. I really enjoyed all nine characters that live in Tranquilium House and rooted for some of them in their individual stories. I think if you like Liane Moriarity you will enjoy this book.

As a side note: I saw a reviewer mention that the book’s title “Nine Perfect Strangers” is misleading because some of the characters know each other (a husband/wife and another husband and wife with his daughter). However, the title is valid because Masha (the director of the wellness retreat) mentions at one point that she needs to focus because there are “nine strangers who would soon become the family.” So they are strangers to the Masha and the retreat, not necessarily to the each other.
