Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, laments, sometimes sternly, sometimes patiently, sometimes empathetically, sometimes in sad denial, the changes in her small town of Crosby, Maine, and around the world, but she doesn’t.

She always acknowledges the changes around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance; a former student who has lost the will to live; Olive’s own adult son, who feels bullied by her very irrational sensitivity; and her husband Henry, who actually finds her loyalty to their marriage both a blessing and a curse.

As the townsfolk grapple with their small and terrible problems, Olive gains a deeper understanding of herself and her life, sometimes painfully but always with ruthless honesty. Olive Kitteridge offers insights into the human condition: its conflicts, its tragedies and joys, and the requisite resilience.

Olive Kitteridge is indomitable presence throughout the book. Some stories have the faintest mention of Olive, while others impress with the authoritarian determination of a woman determined to get what she wants. Olive is rarely the center of attention, but she acts like a magnet, bringing any story to life in her presence.

Olive is a former schoolteacher, a tall and often awkward woman, but with the years she grows tall,

“…his ankles swelled, his shoulders rolled up behind his neck, and his wrists and hands seemed to take on the size of a man. Olive Minds: Of course you do; sometimes he cares a lot about it privately. But she’s not going to give up the comfort of eating at this stage of the game, and that means she probably looks like a fat, sleeping seal wrapped in some kind of gauze bandage right now.”

Olive has an impressive presence and an intriguing, undefinable complexity. While he offers very little filter in his comments and consideration for others, and finds crying at weddings ridiculous, he cries when he sees a young anorexic woman, Nina.

Olive shook her head again and blew her nose. He looked at Nina and said softly, “I don’t know who you are, but young lady, you break my heart.”
“I’m not trying,” Nina said defensively. ‘It’s not like I can do anything about it.’
‘Oh I know. I know. Olive agreed.

The first story is a touching tale of her husband Harry, who is a pharmacist, and his relationship with a young married assistant who tragically loses her husband. The relationship subtly shifts from a platonic friendship to the tender hint of deeper feelings as you imagine what life would be like with this young woman. The emotional conflict overwhelms him until he finally asks Olive if she would ever leave him. Oh, for God’s sake, Henry. You could make a woman sick. she answers

Most of the stories that follow resonate with a sense of betrayal. You can feel the connection to the characters, laugh at the incidents, marvel at some events, nod your head in appreciation at many, and shed a tear or two at others. The writing is emotionally stimulating, revealing moments so vivid they evoke feelings you might not have expected.

This is a wonderful reading experience, steeped in beautiful prose, imagery, and sentiments that we all encounter or experience throughout our lives. I highly recommend this book.
