Another fast-paced, non-stop action addition to the FBI thriller series. This time it’s very, very personal for Savich and Sherlock. In the early hours of the morning, Sherlock is awakened by a series of almost inaudible squeaks from his house alarm. That means your house alarm is off, and as smart and savvy FBI agents, they have a plan for it. Savich goes downstairs to check and Sherlock goes into the nursery. The sight Sherlock sees takes her breath away.

Someone is standing over her sleeping son with a knife in one hand and a gun in the other. After a small verbal and physical argument, the perpetrator escapes through the cut bars in the window. Was Sean supposed to be kidnapped for ransom or was it even more sinister because someone wanted revenge on Savich or Sherlock?

This begins the first of four puzzles to be solved. I love that there isn’t just one case per book, just like in real life agents have to solve more than one case at a time. I also love the characters. They are all well written and understandable. In addition to the ongoing characters of Savich and Sherlock, we meet FBI Agent Sala Porto, who is a victim and investigator, and Willicott, Maryland Police Commissioner Ty Christie.

Ty gets up bright and early every morning to have a cup of that thick Turkish coffee that he loves so much. As he walks out onto the quarterdeck, he sees a small rowing boat on foggy Lake Massey. There are two figures on the boat, but he can’t tell if they’re male or female, or see anything recognizable about them. Then, to his astonishment, one swings the boat’s oar against the other and then pushes the body out of the boat and into the lake.

Ty immediately calls for his deputies, then boards his own boat and sets off to see if he can rescue the victim. There is no body! Had the body been weighed before being beaten and thrown into the water? Ty then calls the local sea transporter to look for the body. Everyone is shocked to find not only the corpse but also the bones of other skeletons. Someone has been using the lake as a body dump for a long time. Does Willicott have a serial killer in his midst?

Are all cases related? The investigations intertwine and also separate and intertwine and separate. That just means there are many, many unexpected twists.

I have to say I miss seeing the “visions” of Savich, who is involved in the case, and I missed MAX too, although he only showed up a bit.
