RUNNING HOT is the story of Luther Malone, an ex-cop who has been divorced twice and needs a stick after getting shot. His paranormal talent sees auras. He also has a hidden variant where he can affect other people’s auras, giving them a little nudge in the direction Luther wants.

Luther lives in Hawaii and is assigned by J&J (Arcane’s investigative agency) to escort a librarian to a Hawaiian resort to help find a killer. Luther doesn’t expect the old librarian to be Grace Renquist, a sexy young woman with secrets. The two are instantly attracted to each other and share a similar talent. Grace also sees auras, but can use them like a fingerprint to identify and profile someone. Grace also has a secret ability. She used her talent to kill.

Luther and Grace are damaged people. They have both been deeply hurt and are deeply alone. This is the story of how they build intimacy with each other and create a family that neither of them had. There is an exciting plot that deals with Nightshade (the conspiracy within the arcane), but the heart of this story is that Luther and Grace meet. A book that strikes a good balance between romance and suspense. I also liked the secondary characters. Even the villains are interesting and have some interesting personalities.

This is the fifth book in the Arcane Society series and is currently the third in the series. Although you could theoretically read it alone, much of the backstory of the Nightshade conspiracy is covered in the earlier contemporary stories, and the society’s story and characters mentioned certainly make a lot more sense if you’ve read the earlier books.

This book is interesting because it’s really the first to solidify his position in the Jayneverse. First we see fan-favorite Arizona Snow, who appeared in the Eclipse Bay trilogy, then we meet for the first (but not the last!) of the Sweetwater family. The Sweetwaters appear in the Harmony series (Jayne Castle) and are in fact the main characters in it.

But back to this book. Luther Malone and Grace Renquist are injured and survive. Both have mysterious pasts. Both have exceptional talents that are deadly but underestimated. These factors combine to create two very interesting individuals that make them unusual investigators.
The addition of Nightshade and the drug to this situation creates an intense and entertaining suspense side to this paranormal romance that Arcane fans and PNR fans alike will enjoy.
