One touch is enough. One touch, and Juliette Ferrars makes a grown man gasp. One touch and it can kill.

No one knows the reason why Juliette has such incredible power. She feels like a curse, a burden that one person could never bear. But the Restoration sees it as a gift, she sees it as an opportunity. An opportunity for a deadly weapon.

Juliette has never fought for herself. But when she is reunited with the one person who cared for her, she finds a power she never knew she had.

It felt like more than just reading a book or enjoying a story. It was a total immersion in the spirit of a character posing as a phoenix.

The good

The story begins in the mind of Juliette, a devastated girl. A mentally unbalanced girl, held in solitary confinement for years and waiting for the end. Her unpredictable thoughts are so accurately conveyed in the writing that I clearly saw her pain and vulnerability.

She really loved books that have such a crystal clear way of imagining what life would be like in her shoes. Each of Juliette’s revelations made me imagine what I would be like in the same situations. I have to say that she would be much more broken and much less likely to trust anyone. I can see the inner strength of her so well just knowing that fact. Juliette is automatically a character that I wanted to animate.

Then there is how everything is revealed. It’s a good build for every little piece, so in the end I really felt like I learned a lot about people and the world they live in. I felt a balanced amount of story, romance, and action from a girl. The writing was very well done. At first it was all chaotic internal dialogue and by the end Juliette’s thoughts had become so direct that she seemed to get stronger and healthier with each chapter just writing.

The secondary characters are also great. Adam Kent appearing on the scene and turning the meat on the story was well developed. He allowed me to see moments from his childhood to today. His brother James is exactly what you’d expect from a 10-year-old who grows up only on bravado and “but I want to.” He was really looking for some parental care which he found in his older brother. Kenji was the fun sidekick, delivering bites and banter.

The bad
In fact, it was hard for me to imagine Juliette being scared of Warner just because she is like that. She has nothing to lose, she has a power that should be able to protect her, so why this intense fear? The hate I could get, but not what I almost thought was irrational fear.

Also, I thought I had received an unedited copy of this book when I started reading it. I wanted so badly to break out my red pencil and add Oxford commas. Then I got it and it all made sense, so it suddenly became beautiful.

The love
There is a great romance between Adam and Juliette. It happens to me a little too “easy”, but I understand it because there is a past and an understanding between the two. She already loves him very much and I don’t remember her loving him back, though I’m sure she’s acting like she loves her too. Although the fact that she didn’t say it (at least that’s what I remember) sure makes me think.

conclusion
An incredibly well-written book that plunges you into the subconscious of a delicate yet strong girl, Shatter Me offers a good blend of intrigue, love, and trust. We recommend.
