One of my greatest joys as a reader is seeing an author grow in her craft. Following Cowles’ writing journey is pure joy and makes my romantic heart ridiculously happy. She raises the bar with each new book, and I know without a doubt that her romance novels will be amazing and satisfying reading experiences. Writing so well, it’s hard to believe it can get any better, but I have no doubt that the best is yet to come and I can’t wait to see what this talented storyteller brings us next.

Tragedy struck the small town of Wolf Gap a decade ago and many lives were forever changed, perhaps most notably Laiken Montgomery. She lives with emotional scars and physical pain as constant reminders, but she finds happiness in her friends and her job as an art gallery director. Her heart bears the scars of her pain, and she has little left for a romantic relationship.

Boden Cavanaugh may be one of the most celebrated actors in Hollywood, but he’s no stranger to loss. As a public figure, he had no choice but to process his pain in public as hungry vultures constantly hover in hope of a sound bite or honest shot meant only to satisfy rabid fans by exploiting a vulnerability.

There are two sides to Boden’s visit to Wolf Gap. Escape the cameras that are put in your face and do extensive research for an upcoming film project. He plans to remain inconspicuous and have little interaction with the people of the city. But plans can change, and Boden does when he sees something through the window that prompts him to enter the gallery where Laiken works. Two broken hearts acknowledge each other’s pain and a tentative friendship begins to blossom.

Oh my heart, all of you, this story! Returning to these characters is like coming home to unconditional support, unconditional acceptance, and unconditional love. Somehow two lost souls find healing, courage, and a chance to find the love they both believed was lost forever. Cowles then adds the perfect amount of drama and suspense guaranteed to keep you reading late into the night.

There is an unguarded authenticity and wise understanding to these pages that only come from knowing firsthand loss, pain, and heartache, and as my mind was engrossed in the narrative, my heart was beating with sympathy for all these characters who had to bear. Although it is fiction, there is a wealth of wisdom to be found that can serve each of us at various points in life’s journey.

Although readers will be drawn to Laiken and Boden’s romance, their story will make the reader feel even more deeply connected. In balance with tragedy, grief and pain are healing, forgiveness and second chances. Your heart may feel broken, but then it will spread its wings and soar. Poignant, heartfelt, and uplifting, this exquisitely extraordinary romance is one of my favorite and most special reads this year and one you definitely don’t want to miss.

I wish I could sum up the feeling I get when I read a book by Catherine, there is something so captivating about her writing that I just can’t get enough of it. The way it weaves romance and suspense has me in love and on the edge of my seat at the same time!

And Shattered Sea was no different, from the tragic opening prologue to the underlying mystery surrounding today’s tragedies, it was entangled in the love story of Laiken and Boden. With each twist and turn, I wondered who to trust, and at the same time, I was excited by Boden’s ability to break down Laiken’s walls and become the enduring force of love he needed in his life.

Tragedy had robbed both Laiken and Boden of their love in the past, both knowing the pain of loss and all the impact it could have on the life to come. The chronic pain Laiken endured felt so real and heartbreaking, a daily reminder of all he had lost. While Boden was instantly smitten with Laiken, I liked that they formed a friendship to learn how to open their hearts again and heal the shattered parts of themselves.

He was so tender and caring with her, giving her space when he needed it, but also knowing when he pushed her to see that her connection was always friendly, swoon! Boden, being a hidden Hollywood actor, definitely added more secrecy to the relationship.

The hiding gave an element of forced closeness which I loved and the ride in the snowy cabin upped the heat factor! Also, I loved Little Gizmo! Overall this story added to the suspense factor, I definitely didn’t see the twist coming, but it also had a swooning hero that I wouldn’t mind getting rid of!
