Even before he had magic, Emerson would have done anything for St. Cyprian

The plot of this novel was certainly interesting and far from the witchy cuteness of Practical Magic, instead of denying the craft or choosing not to practice it, Emerson’s memory of his self-awareness at age 18 and knowledge of it was erased St Cyprian is the headquarters of the witches and home to the world’s ruling coven of witches, led by the world’s most powerful witch, who is also the mother of the town’s mayor, Emerson’s nemesis Skip.

Why they chose this small Midwestern town remains a mystery, but Emerson’s perspective on his own life, family and friends is on the verge of a rude awakening as he prepares for his highly competitive creation: the Festival. Redbud of the city.

What I loved about this novel were the supporting characters, each with their own sorcery and special abilities, who have cared for and protected the deranged Emerson for the past decade. As Emerson begins to discover his own powers and abilities, his friends, family, and confidants become his teachers and protectors, each contributing a little more to Emerson’s self-knowledge. I laughed out loud at the biting and sarcastic tone of Emerson’s confidant.

I particularly liked Jacob the Healer, who comes to Emerson’s rescue on more than one occasion, though I would have liked a little more romance and sizzle between these two compelling characters, but unfortunately the heat between them was almost all behind closed doors. It’s surprising since there is usually a lot of heat in the paranormal romances I’ve read in the past.

As the cast of characters expands, the impending dangers and the plot intensify (yes, I know how trite that phrase is), and that’s when this novel really grabbed me and became an unbeatable read, which ends happily. for now, but with a little cliffhanger at the end that I wasn’t expecting since the pre-read copy I read had no number, the discovery that there was more to come was a shocking surprise at the end of the novel.

While I’m not a huge fan of paranormal romance novels, there was still a lot to like about this well-written novel and I’m excited to see where these two talented authors take this magical cast of interesting and intriguing characters next and to find out. What dangers will they be exposed to in the future?
