Alice May Oseman born on October 16, year 1994 is an English author of children’s books. She landed her first publishing contract at 17 and published her first novel, Solitaire, in 2014. She is also the author of the books Radio Silence, I Was Born for This, and Loveless, and the webcomic Heartstopper, which has been published as several graphic novels and adapted into a television series, also written by Oseman. Her novels focus on contemporary teenage life in Britain and have won multiple awards including the Inky Awards and the United By Pop Awards.

Born in Chatham, Kent, Oseman grew up with her younger brother William in a town near Rochester and attended Rochester High School. In 2016 she graduated with a BA in English Literature from Durham University.

Oseman’s debut novel Solitaire was published by the HarperCollins in year 2014 after the bidding war. It follows the story of Tori Spring, a pessimistic teenager who then meets Michael, her polar opposite, an incredibly optimist. They try to find out who is behind the pranks at their school, which become increasingly serious as the novel progresses. Other characters include his brother Charlie, who suffers from a serious eating disorder and is further explored in Oseman’s Heartstopper webcomic. The novel covers topics such as friendship, mental health issues, eating disorders and LGBT+ relationships.

In 2016, Oseman published her second novel named, Radio Silence. The novel follows Frances Janvier, an achiever whose life revolves around her intake at Cambridge, who meets the shy creator behind her favorite podcast, Aled Last. Issues such as academic pressure and LGBT+ relationships and identities are central to the novel. Oseman has been candid in interviews about how Frances’ experience at Radio Silence resembled the pressures of her own school and a subsequent disillusionment with science following her education at Durham University.

This novel was praised for portraying characters of different ethnicities, genders and sexualities. Oseman has often written on her blog about the importance of writing diversity and has spoken in interviews about the lack of diversity in Solitaire. The novel won the year 2017 Silver Inky Award for the Young Adult Literature.

Oseman’s third book, titled I Was Born For This, was released in May 2018. It follows the story of the Fereshteh “Angel” Rahimi and Jimmy Kaga-Ricci. The story is about a band called The Ark and their fandom, with a particular focus on teen fandom. One reviewer said that one message in the book was, “You can be part of a fandom, but you have to make sure you don’t get caught up in it, and being an extreme fan can keep those in the limelight from turning away.” , so feel like they can be.” themselves”.

Oseman is also the writer and artist of the Heartstopper webcomic, which follows the romantic relationship between Charlie Spring (Tori Spring’s brother) and Nick Nelson, both of whom appear in Solitaire. Volume one was released in October 2018, volume two in July 2019, volume three in February 2020 and volume four in May 2021.

Oseman published two e-book novels based on characters from Solitaire and Heartstopper, titled Nick and Charlie (July 2015) and This Winter (November 2015). Both were published by the HarperCollins Children’s Books.

Oseman’s novels have been praised many times for being “relatable” and realistic in their portrayal of contemporary teenage life. Her first book Solitaire received particular praise due to his young age at the time of the publishing deal he contributed to a BBC breakfast interview on 22 July 2014.

In 2018, to celebrate the release of a third young adult novel, This I Was Born For, all books published by Oseman received matching new covers. The redesigned covers were released in May along with the new book.

In July 2020, Oseman published Loveless, a young adult novel based on her own experiences in college.

I loved that Tori honestly felt like a teenager who really struggles with mental health issues, but was trying to convince herself that she was okay. She pushed her friends away from her, she couldn’t concentrate on anything other than reading her blog, and she also started making mistakes at school.

I’ve never been as bad as Tori while my depression was undiagnosed and untreated (at least I hope I wasn’t), but honestly, depression is hard and not everyone experiences it the same way, and having Tori reflects some aspects of depression I have never seen in the media that this book really did for me. Tori isn’t always nice and she doesn’t like herself.

She struggles with self-hatred, causing her to hate those around her (or just feel totally insensitive) and uses dark humor to make terrible jokes to get her way. It’s not a good way to deal with it, but honestly, a lot of the coping mechanisms you develop on your own (especially as a teenager) aren’t good.

I loved Tori’s relationship with Charlie. They love each other very much, but both of them are really fighting. You can’t always help another person if you don’t know how to take care of yourself, and that’s hard to learn. Tori sees some signs that Charlie isn’t doing well (and he sees them in her), but she doesn’t want to believe that he’s not doing well. He is heartbreaking, but also realistic.

I think it’s also important that this book shows that recovery is not linear, that you can still have bad periods during therapy (like Charlie) and that doesn’t mean you’ve failed. You are still dignified and lovable. I saw a part of my youthful self in both Tori and Charlie, and in her school life as well.

For me, this book is so focused on the characters and I can definitely understand why people wouldn’t like it, because it would be hard to connect with the Tori if you cant understand why she is this way. But for me, this book really brought tears to my eyes and my teenage self would have really appreciated this book and the lessons it taught.

Sometimes you just have to get close to someone. They won’t fix you, but they can try to help you fix yourself. Also, sometimes it’s easier to force yourself to do something for someone else. Again, not the best/healthiest coping mechanism, but I’ve done it A LOT in my life and finally realized I should do it myself, it just took a while.

Solitaire was really a secondary plot point for me as I found out early on who it was and why they were doing it, but that didn’t make it any less interesting. It was fascinating to see Tori experience teasing her, to see her learn to feel and care about what was going on around her.
There was a lot of character development for her when comparing the actions of Solitaire, so I enjoyed reading about that.
