Born to a lord, seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth had a life of wealth and privilege ahead of her. But between sociable teas and trying on silk dresses, she leads a forbidden secret life. Against her father’s strict wishes and society’s expectations, Audrey often sneaks into her uncle’s lab to study the cruel practice of forensic science.

When her work on a series of gruesomely murdered bodies draws Audrey into the investigation of a serial killer, her search for answers draws her into her own protected world. The surprising twists and turns of the story, complemented by real and sinister photos from the period, make this glitzy New York Times bestselling debut from author Kerri Maniscalco unforgettable.

You know that euphoric feeling when you fall completely in love with the first book in a series and then get excited because you know there are more books out there with the same characters you love now? I just finished reading this a few hours ago and I still feel the same way. I absolutely loved everything about this book!

There is such a diverse cast of characters that bring so many different elements to the overall story. However, my main favorite was definitely Audrey Rose. I love her, love her, love her! She is incredibly smart, brave, headstrong and a feminist. While working doggedly to uncover the identity of Jack the Ripper, she also resists and fights against society’s traditional and misogynist views of women. She’s fierce and very brave, but she’s also very feminine and I really love that about her. I don’t see many heroines who are brave but also allowed to be feminine, so it was amazing to finally get one.

I didn’t like Thomas at first, but after a few more chapters I realized that he reminded me a lot of Jace and Will from Shadowhunter Chronicles and that I immediately adored him. He’s ridiculously smart, arrogant, and socially awkward because he doesn’t quite know how to get along with most people. Despite constantly making Audrey Rose nervous due to his arrogance, he is one of the first (and few) male characters to admire her intellect and believe in her abilities, and never sees her as inferior because of her gender.

Kerri’s writing is beautiful and the narrator did a great job of bringing her words to life. I loved his portrayals of all the different characters; everyone was different and it helped me visualize the character better and didn’t confuse me at all. I hate it when narrators use the same tone or accent for multiple characters because I get confused as to who is speaking. Kerri’s writing is so vivid and vivid that I really felt like I was in Victorian London as I walked through this mystery with all the characters. Their voices also felt very real.

While I already knew the general story behind Jack the Ripper and the horrific killing spree he went on from a few documentaries on the History Channel, this was the first related fiction that I read. Although the main objective was to find and stop Jack the Ripper, I love how the story emphasizes the investigation and the tragedy of the lives lost in the murders, rather than focusing on the Ripper himself like the story does. I really felt involved in the investigation and empathetic to the victims and their families.

The only thing that bothered me (and it’s a very small thing compared to everything else I loved about this book) was all the gore and gruesome descriptions once I started reading the book. I think I should have found out considering this is a Jack the Ripper story but the vivid descriptions of all the autopsies, the bodies of the women killed etc.

I was surprised and literally felt sick. I was in the car when we started the book and one of the reasons I turned it off was because I was getting sick and not sure if it was coming from the car or from the narrator on the speakers describing what it feels like to dig into a cadaver and look for the liver. So yes, a little warning would have been nice. Haha

Suspenseful and engaging, Stalking Jack the Ripper got me on the edge of my seat trying to unravel the mystery alongside our heroes, screaming over the romantic scenes (can anyone say “new OTP”?) and before Terrible and appalling wince descriptions. And I loved every minute of it. All of the mysteries and tensions had me so captivated that I couldn’t put the book down!

I’m not kidding, I only borrowed the audio book to listen to while showering, cooking, cleaning etc. So I can confidently say that I officially have a new favorite series and I highly recommend it! If you love gothic horror, mystery, suspense and a wild and feminine heroine, definitely get this game ASAP!
