The final books are very difficult, especially when they are part of a popular and long-running series like the Charley Davidson series. From the first book to the last, Darynda has inspired laughs, romance and unbreakable friendships with characters living and dead who are impossible to love. And as one door closes another opens wide and I feel like this isn’t a goodbye for a lot of the characters. Or at least I hope it isn’t.

In this part, Charley finally returns to the mortal world after being sent to a hellish dimension thanks to Gee Oh Dee. Time works very differently in both the celestial and infernal realms, and while Charley is aware of the exact number of years, days, minutes, and seconds that have passed, he has no idea what that means in the infernal realm, to mortals . Luckily for her, it’s not an exorbitant amount of time. Unfortunately, demons and hell on earth wait for no one, and before she knows it she’ll be back solving cases and trying to get to the bottom of a plague with demonic connections.

Summoned to Thirteenth Grave was truly a farewell story, and that was certainly a focus of this book. Each of the characters featured had a presence in this book, and while some appearances were as simple as a few words, others were told of their fate in the battle between Satan and the Sentinel. Because yes, that fight is still on the horizon, and yes, Beep is still at the heart of everything. Along with everyone’s favorite Daeva, of course, and some amazing new additions to the Sentry.

There were many surprises and twists in this final book, almost as if Darynda was waiting for us and saving the best for last. Not only that, Charley finally learned the story of her mother’s death, the story that everyone around her kept under a cloak of secrecy, divulging only the basics. This was such an emotional book, not only because it is the last part, but also because there are losses past and present and every seemingly small thread connected to those losses has been explored and closed. Jones has never been afraid to test her characters (and readers!) emotionally, but she definitely outdid herself with this one.

I heard about a spin-off and I really hope it happens in the future. This story cannot be finished and I’m not saying that just because I can’t let go. The greatest battle is yet to come, the prophecies are yet to be fulfilled, and thanks to Charley’s ability to see bits of the future, so many current characters have been given a place in the Sentry. While Reyes and Charley’s arc may be over, I’m confident it’s not really the end.

Conclusion: Phenomenal series finale with plenty of room to revisit the world and (some of) the characters. A lot of issues in the series have found closure, but many haven’t, and I’m hopeful there’ll be a spin-off sooner rather than later. I highly recommend the entire series and will certainly read the series again in the future.
