As always, Jana Deleon brings a book full of emotion and laughter. State police take over after a man is found decapitated in a maze at a Halloween festival in Sinful Louisiana. I love how the state police zeroed in on Fortune after listening to Celia and how she didn’t let herself get hit. The fact that they didn’t know that she was a former CIA agent or that her attorney was a former federal prosecutor known as the Grim Reaper. The women take on the statesmen in this book and it’s hilarious. The scene with Celia and the flash was hilarious.
It’s amazing that this series, with its wacky premise of an ex-CIA agent living in a small town in Louisiana, along with picturesque, much older women who were spies in the Vietnam War, outperforms the twelve books that preceded it. . be so funny Talent. Writing talent that can really still make me laugh and keep turning the pages.
Fortune is now “out” as an ex-CIA hiding under a false identity as a librarian for a foreign arms dealer. She and her partners in chaos run a private investigation company. Her first real client comes as a surprise when her deputy sheriff’s friend quietly hires her to investigate the appearance of a headless corpse in the town’s haunted Halloween maze.
The twist is that the man had apparently died of natural causes a few days earlier and his body was stolen from the morgue. Was it murder too? After reading so many Miss Fortune books, you know the action will be nonstop, there will be frequent laughs, slapstick, casseroles, and baked goods, and it will all work out in the end.
These are not the types of books that will change your life or the world. But sometimes they are just what you need and they are always entertaining. Writing humor is really difficult, but Jana Deleon makes it look really easy in this series. You may not need to read the entire series in order, but you should read Louisiana Longshot first to understand the characters and the city. It’s also one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. I even woke up my husband laughing quietly. Now read the series too.
