In little Merinac, Kansas, Chicken Mimi’s and Chicken Frannie’s have spent a century serving up the best fried chicken in the state, and the legendary feud between their respective owners, the Moores and the Pogociellos, has lasted just as the long.

No one feels the effects more than thirty-five-year-old widow Amanda Moore, who grew up working for her mother at Mimi before scandalously marrying Frank Pogociello and switching sides to work at Frannie. Tired of being caught in the middle, Amanda sends an SOS to Food Wars, the reality restaurant competition, promising $100,000 to the winner. But with that she throws both families out of the frying pan and straight into the fire. . .

The last thing Brooklyn-based organization guru Mae Moore, Amanda’s sister, wants is to go back to Kansas. But as her career implodes, helping the fading Mimis look good in Food Wars becomes Mae’s best bet, even if she butts heads with Amanda and Frannie in the process. But when family secrets become public knowledge, the sisters must decide: will they fight each other or for their inheritance?

What makes this book so great is that it’s literally like watching some kind of “unscripted” behind-the-scenes reality show (but you know it’s at least lightly scripted) posing as a cooking show. Something like that, but with much more details.

This story gets complicated pretty quickly when you have to figure out who is related to whom and who married what, but it all boils down to the fact that there are two families that own chicken restaurants. One was called Mimi’s and the other Frannie’s. When one of the daughters-in-law writes a letter to Food Wars, a reality show that offers the winner a $100,000 reward, the war for the best chicken restaurant turns epic.

There’s a lot going on in this story, including a sister who makes a living as a TV show host in New York, but may have lost her job and sees that this is exactly the way to get back in the spotlight ( much to his chagrin, the sister), a rather attractive new employee at one of the restaurants, and a whole mess of family secrets that won’t stay secret much longer.

I really enjoyed this story. It’s just a fun book that, while starving you, gives you a little time to escape into the world of unreality and “watch” a family compete in a show they’re made for that can make the difference between success and failure every time. . The writing is very good, the plot is there and it’s exciting to see where it ends, and it’s one of those books that leaves you with a lot of emotion throughout. I loved.

I loved how the story begins with Amanda’s dramatic “Food Wars” email drafts that never get sent but are cleverly filled with tons of backstory. Surprisingly, the boring email she sends brings two family restaurants into conflict as they compete for a $100,000 prize – wow!

There’s a lot going on in this story, so it’s best to read long chunks in one sitting if you can.

The two main characters, sisters Mae and Amanda, have taken very different paths in life. Mae, who has enviable social media accounts, seems to have it all, but her search for the “perfect life” away from Kansas leaves her wanting. Amanda, on the other hand, is the sister who stayed behind and “settled” her life in her hometown.

Both women want more and try to figure out what that is as the story unfolds. There are a lot of bad feelings between the sisters that seem more vindictive than vulnerable. Perhaps that’s due in large part to Sabrina, the adorably obnoxious host of Food Wars, who seems to be around every corner with a cameraman ready to capture the sisters’ worst moments. We ended up cheering for the Chicken Sisters but wishing it hadn’t been such a painful ride.

Ultimately the story is about overcoming personal obstacles and I’m always a fan when the characters show growth at the end.

KJ Dell’Antonia, author of The Chicken Sisters, has written a thought-provoking, fascinating, and entertaining novel. The genres of this story are Women’s Domestic Life Fiction, Family Life Fiction, and Fiction. There is also a touch of satire. The timeline of this story is set in the present, but it goes into the past when it comes to characters and events.

The story unfolds around a family feud that has lasted more than a century between the Moores and the Pogociellos and their fried chicken businesses. When the daughter of one family marries the son of the other, it becomes more intense. The author describes her colorful characters as intricate and complex. When you add in the modern component of reality TV and mass media and “Food Wars,” you have the ingredients for an explosive catastrophe.

Amanda and Mae are two sisters who are as opposite as possible in every way. When Amanda sends a letter to the reality show Food Wars, she has no idea what’s going to happen. Mae, on the other hand, has a media background and knows what she can go through when she’s not too close to home. Mae returns home after a disappointment to help her mother while the sisters fight in “Food Wars”. Is there a chance for the sisters to work together instead of against each other?

I love that the author discusses the issues of hoarding and mental illness. The importance of family, sisters, friends, forgiveness, second chances, love and hope are also mentioned.
