I thought this story had a great mix of business challenges and romance fermented with kindness and hospitality. It’s an easy read, filled with good food, strangers making friends and a cold but lovingly described setting in the Scottish Highlands. The romance(s) is sweet rather than hot, and the slightly outgunned heroine finds that life in your castle can be delightfully sweet, despite obstacles like leaky roofs, terrible snowstorms, unworldly guests and a fit writer who blows cold and heat can.

Izzy, the central female character, has severe financial constraints but must clean up the run-down chateau she recently inherited in order to market it as a posh hotel. To me, his biggest challenge wasn’t fixing the building, but his enthusiastic and wasteful mother, Xanthe. I just don’t know how Izzy can remain calm when Xanthe keeps throwing up new surprises and pretending that a) she’s okay with it, b) it’s not a problem, and c) the cost doesn’t matter.

And yet many of Xanthe’s actions end with surprisingly good results, including her decision to take on a long-term tenant before the castle’s renovation begins.

There are references to the Ireland novel in the series, but you don’t have to read the previous book to fully understand and enjoy this one. I could have done it with a toned-down Xanthe, but overall it’s a good, leisurely read with a festive, happy ending.

I loved this book! The characters were fresh and fun. I loved the setting of the castle. It added so much more flair to the holiday season. Xanthe was over the top. It added a bit of silliness to the story, which was fun. All of the characters were fantastic at giving the book such great depth. I really enjoyed this book.
