THE COLD DISH is the 1 in the LONGMIRE series. It’s a bit different from the TV series.

First of all, Walt is a bit of a jerk and Vic tolerates him more than respects him. That’s maybe not the case, but she calls him names like Fat****. That would normally get you fired from most sheriff’s offices.

Henry is also taller and appears to be a very good shot with a Sharp rifle, the murder weapon in Walt’s most recent case. Someone shoots four boys accused of raping Henry’s niece, Melissa Little Bird. They were found guilty, but the judge sentenced them to limited terms in juvenile institutions.

Whoever kills the boys shoots them from a very long distance, 500 yards. Walt was able to get that shot, as was Henry and Melissa’s dad. Lonnie, who is missing his legs, and Omar, a Buffalo Bill-like character who is an expert with the Sharp rifle.

In the middle of the book there is a kind of surprise. Walt reflects on his life: he met a woman, Vonnie, who seems very interested in a relationship. Then there is the surprise. Martha, Walt’s late wife, didn’t really love him. Walt held out for his daughter, who is now a lawyer and doesn’t call her father often enough. I don’t recall hearing that on the TV series. Vic also endures an unhappy marriage and cares for Walt more than she lets on.

There are some interesting secondary characters: Lucian, the old sheriff, lives in a retirement home. Walt plays the chess with him once every a week. In this book, Walt hires Lucian as a dispatcher two days a week. He’s an old-time western sheriff who made his own rules on one case, but Walt respects him and trusts his advice. Turk is Lucian’s nephew, an advertised candidate for the sheriff’s office after Walt retires. Walt wants the Vic to take the of his place.

THE COLD DISH is just another example of the book being better than the TV show. Walt has a sense of humor in the book. He also has great respect for Native American spirituality. There is a scene where Henry is injured and Walt has to get him to safety in the middle of a snowstorm. He almost froze to death. He hears bells and sees ghostly Cheyenne Indians carrying him out of harm’s way, leaving his ears and hands frozen. He may want to read this section twice. He really had no idea what was going on. Somewhere there, Vic came to his aid as well.

You won’t be able to guess who killed these guys. But I’ll give you a piece of advice: remember the old adage: “He’s always the one you least expect.”

Absaroka County Sheriff Walt Longmire is an upcountry lawman with a quiet manner and a no-nonsense way of dispensing justice. He patrols the open wilderness of Wyoming in a truck he calls the Sphere, trying to process the loss of his wife and finding a reason to wake up every morning in a house he’s only half finished.

To be honest, during the first half of the novel I felt like he had read that particular story too many times. Over the years I’ve met several leading detectives like Longmire who have too many similar problems. Also, the admittedly dated Vietnam War background, which perhaps dates the hero longer than the author intended (since Longmire was with the Tet Offensive, he must be in his sixties now), didn’t particularly interest me. That too has happened.

I quite liked Henry Standing Bear and Rep. Victoria Moretti, but then again I had seen too many like them along the way. The characters were rendered well enough, but oddly enough, they didn’t seem to be onstage enough for some of the action.

The kills were also pretty standard, and he had the killer pinned down right outside the door. In fact, I was a bit disappointed that I got it right so early and that the reason wasn’t revealed until the very last act. Many seasoned Mystery readers will probably feel the same way.

Still, I’m glad I stuck with the book. Things really came together in the second half, but it’s more of the country and the history of the place that adds the finishing touches to the story and the writing. There are some really nice touches that reflect the Wild West and the supernatural without crossing the line. And there is enough action to finish well.
