Rachel McLean’s “The Corfe Castle Murders” is the first book in the Dorset Crime series featuring DCI Lesley Clarke and her team. Lesley, who had suffered from PTSD after a bomb attack in Birmingham, was given the option of retiring or moving to a calmer location. She chose the latter and is now heading the Major Crimes Unit in rural Dorset. While taking a stroll around Corfe Castle with her daughter before her appointment starts, Lesley hears a scream and comes across a woman who has discovered the dead body of her boyfriend, Archie.

It turns out that Archie was a serial womaniser and the prime suspect for his murder becomes the next victim. Lesley shakes up her team, which includes three detectives and two support officers, and insists that they follow procedures and base their conclusions on evidence. Her tough-talking and swearing, however, do not sit well with some members of her team, especially her puritanical DS, Dennis. They introduce a swear box for her, which she refuses to contribute to. As she investigates the murders, Lesley also has to deal with personal issues when she finds out that her husband is having an affair.

The book is a well-written police procedural with a compelling murder mystery that is not predictable or contrived. The characters are well-drawn and flawed, and Lesley is a strong and determined protagonist who uses evidence and procedures to solve the case. The introduction of her personal problems adds depth to her character and makes her more relatable. The book also has some minor discrepancies and errors that should have been caught by a better proofreader, but they do not detract from the overall enjoyment of the story.

One of the strengths of the book is the setting. Corfe Castle, an iconic landmark in England, provides a picturesque and atmospheric backdrop to the story. The author does a good job of describing the village and its surroundings, and the historical and archaeological aspects of the story add interest and depth to the plot.

Overall, “The Corfe Castle Murders” is a promising start to the Dorset Crime series and a good read for fans of murder mysteries and police procedurals. The characters are engaging, the plot is well-paced, and the setting is interesting. Readers who enjoy this book will be looking forward to the next instalment in the series.
