Shay Goldstein has been a producer at her Seattle public radio station for nearly a decade and can’t imagine working anywhere else. But lately there has been a constant argument between her and her new colleague, Dominic Yun, who has just completed his master’s degree in journalism and thinks he knows everything there is to know about the public radio.

When the struggling network needs a new concept, Shay proposes a program that her boss enthusiastically greenlights. On The Ex Talk, two ex-boyfriends will share relationship advice live on air.

Her boss decides that Shay and Dominic are the perfect co-hosts considering how much they already despise each other. Nobody likes the idea of lying to listeners, but it’s either that or unemployment. His audience engages quickly, and it’s not long before The Ex Talk becomes a Seattle must-watch and is climbing the podcast charts.

As the show grows, so does his deception, especially as Shay and Dominic begin to fall for each other. In an industry that values the truth, getting caught could mean the end of more than just your career.

The Ex Talk is a humorous romance filled with sardonic jokes and hilarious imagery, the latter of which was never too much or at the expense of plot-driving. The entire book is from Shay’s point of view, but we’re occasionally treated to a transcript of her radio show.

These transcripts are long enough to give us a sense of what their readers are hearing because they’re not diluted with Shay’s inner thoughts, and long enough to give us a sense of the humor and the chemistry between the two co-hosts. These transcripts left me wanting more and wishing this was an actual radio/podcast show to subscribe to. The author is a huge fan of public radio and it really shows in the sheer passion of the words on the page.

Dominic and Shay have a lot of chemistry from the start. Since the book is from Shay’s point of view, I can’t speak to Dominic’s first impressions, but it’s clear that he annoys her right away. He mentions his master’s degree whenever he can and can be very stubborn about his opinions, regardless of the years of experience of those around him.

All of this is made worse by the sexist tendencies of his boss, who appears to respect Dominic’s views of someone who has worked for him for the past ten years. On the other hand, Shay is far from perfect. You can be inflexible and conscious of your non-traditional radio voice. As Dominic and Shay get to know each other better (they have to if they’re going to pretend to date), it’s clear that they have a lot in common and might not be as incompatible as they thought.

There is a small age difference between Dominic and Shay as she is five years older than him. I was a bit apprehensive about this at first, but luckily we didn’t encounter anyone (including her) who called themselves a cougar or a crib thief. She sometimes referred to herself as an “old lady” and teased him for only watching Buffy on Netflix. That is, props to talk about Buffy beyond the title, which many other books do. It’s like they feel dropping the name Buffy or Veronica Mars would entice millennials like me to love the book. (Sometimes it works because these are two of the best TV shows of all time.)

As in any good romance novel, the secondary characters are three-dimensional and interesting. Both Shay and Dominic have complex character arcs, but I was a bit disappointed that the secondary relationships weren’t developed or developed as well. Especially since there was a strong focus at the beginning of the book on providing a backstory for Shay’s relationship with her mother and with her best friend Ameena. That’s honestly my only criticism of the book. The first few pages were very slow and dense with plots and information about friendships and relationships that could have been tied into the plot a bit better.

Although the book is light, it avoids some more serious problems. Interracial dating is touched upon, albeit briefly, and I was a little disappointed that we didn’t get the transcripts of the episode they had planned on the subject. However, Shay’s father died when she was her senior year of high school and her mother was grieving the loss of a great love, but she managed to move on.

Shay was passionate about making an episode of The Ex Talk about grief that was touching, sweet, advanced the novel’s plot, and served to add another layer of depth to this novel. Add to that the commentary on dealing with sexism in the workplace, and this novel is more than just a two-dimensional comedic escape.
I recommend this book to lovers of romantic comedy, regardless of whether they have an irrepressible passion for public radio.
