Amos Decker witnesses a murder outside FBI headquarters. A man shoots an execution-style woman on a crowded sidewalk, then shoots himself.

Despite Decker’s exceptional powers of observation and reasoning, the murder is disturbing. Decker and his team can find absolutely no connection between the shooter, a family man with a successful consulting firm, and his victim, a school teacher. There is also no evidence of a possible motive for the attack.

Enter Harper Brown. As an agent for the Defense Intelligence Agency, he orders Decker to back down on the case. The murder is part of an open DIA investigation so classified that Decker and his team are unauthorized.

But they learn that the DIA believes solving the murder is now a matter of urgency of national security. Critical information may have been leaked to a hostile government, or even worse, an international terrorist group, and an attack may be imminent.

Decker has never been one to play by the rules, especially when the stakes are so high. Forced into an uneasy alliance with Agent Brown, Decker remains focused on one goal: solve the case before it’s too late.

Ever since the first book, I’ve really grown to love Amos Decker. He can be insensitive and abrupt at times, but he is determined. Determined to find the truth. Your perfect memory may be a cross to endure, but it also helps you find what you are looking for.

His new case literally happened before Amos’ eyes. He was walking toward the Hoover Building when he saw a man shoot a woman execution-style. Before Amos can do much, the man points to himself, leaving more questions than answers.

The man is later identified as the Walter Dabney, a government contractor who used to work with the NSA. The woman is a substitute school teacher named Anne Berkshire. Amos and his team (Alex Jamison, Special Agents Ross Bogart and Todd Milligan) are tasked with finding the missing pieces of the investigation.

There are many questions that need the answer:

Why did Walter murder the woman? did they know each other Was it the case of wrong person at the wrong time? Or is something even worse afoot?

When DIA agent Harper Brown soon arrives on the scene, she suggests this could be the last. At first, Harper wants them to put the investigation on hold, but when a stubborn decker offers no new leads, she’s forced to conduct a joint investigation with her team.

As always, Amos’ synesthesia and hyperthymesia are of great help in this case.

The Fix has a lot of suspense and exciting moments. I love that David Baldacci injects enough humor into this book to give it a bit of lightness.

Amos has evolved as a character. He’ll never forget what happened to his family, but he’s starting to realize his social signals aren’t the best. You have made new friends and can become part of the team. The addition of Harper Brown as a new member of the team was a good move by Baldacci.

Amos Decker walks at FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C. passing on his way to work when the guy in front of him pulls a gun, shoots a woman walking near him, and then kills himself. Amos is an eyewitness and his team manages to solve the case. The male victim works as the contractor for the various agencies including FBI, NSA and also CIA. The female victim is a substitute teacher at a Catholic school and a volunteer at a hospice.

Amos was also promoted to be the owner of an up-and-coming building conversion in the neighborhood. He and his friend Alex Jamison will co-own and live in the building. It’s not a good neighborhood right now, but hopefully that will change. While working the case, he also has to deal with some local gang members who are harassing a tenant in the building.

As the backgrounds of the two victims are investigated, the team uncovers much more than they could have imagined, and the military arm of DIA becomes involved with its own investigator, who agrees to work with the Amos and his team. As the team searches for clues, increasing threats from unknown enemies attempt to drive Amos and his fellow investigators from the scene for good.

This is a great story with many intrigues, dangers and mysteries. I really like character of the Amos Decker. He says what he thinks, sometimes to his detriment. I enjoy watching him solve puzzles and ask the questions he asks so his brain can get the information it needs to process. He’s always thinking about the different words people say, how they say it, and what the variations are in the meaning of what they say. He goes over what’s been said over and over until something clicks and sends him down a path that will hopefully solve the case.
