He intends to quickly tie up the loose ends and then return to his busy life and thriving antique shop in New Orleans. Instead, he learns that Mags inherited The Hideaway from him and hired them to renovate it, not an easy task considering his grandmother’s best friends, a motley crew of senior citizens, still live there.

Rather than rushing back to New Orleans, Sara stays in Sweet Bay and embarks on the biggest home rehab project of her career. Between drywall dust, old memories, and a charming contractor, she finds coming back to life in The Hideaway is easier than she expected.

She then discovers a box Mags left in the attic with clues to a life Sara never imagined for her grandmother. With the help of Mags’ friends, Sara begins to piece together the mysterious life of bravery, passion, and choices that miraculously and devastatingly changed her grandmother’s fate.

The Hideaway is Denton’s debut novel, a book with a Southern and Christian theme.

The story is told from the points of view of Mags and Sara. Mags from the past and Sara from the present.

Sara is in the Sweet Bay after the death of her very beloved grandmother, Mags (Margaret Van Buren). Sara thinks it’s a simple will reading and that she can return to her lonely life in New Orleans right away. But Sara becomes the new owner. from The Hideaway, a seedy bed and breakfast that has seen better days. Her grandmother instructs her to restore it to its former glory, even better than when Mags got it. Sara has the option of keeping it or selling it, but she must notify the current residents in advance, residents who are also like family to Sara.

Sara decides it needs a refurb anyway, so why not refurbish the old house?

He hires a contractor (Crawford) and sets out to do as he is told. Along the way, she gradually learns about her grandmother’s past and what led the elderly woman to the Sweet Bay hideout and how she took possession of it. The story others tell about Mags is very different from the life Sarah discovers. How come she didn’t know about this? Why did her grandmother keep the secrets she kept?

Sarah also discovers the truth about her mother and her own past. But Sara now seems to have a future there in Sweet Bay, especially with Crawford.

But Sara also has her life in New Orleans, or thinks she does. The longer he stays in Sweet Bay, the less he wants to go back to his old life. When a land developer begins making plans for the property, Sara is torn between staying and fighting for Hideaway or returning to the life she created. Sara also wonders if she wants to make the same mistake her grandmother made when it came to love. The Hideaway is more than just a place to visit; He has deep memories and love.

For his first appearance, Denton does something remarkable with this story. Combine past and present to weave a beautiful story. It has romance with a not-so-happy ending. It shows that we often do not know the closest people. History also teaches us that what we want is not what we need.

What bothers some readers the most is that Mags’ unrequited love story and Sara’s current love story are almost mirror images. I found it interesting that Sara learned from her grandmother’s mistake. I thought it was a nice part of the story.

This book may drag on, but it can also draw you in. I was drawn to it and found there were times I just couldn’t put it down.

If you have never read any of Denton’s works, this book and Glory Road are standalone stories, so the reader can start with either. If you have read “Glory Road” and enjoyed it, you will probably enjoy this. Denton’s second novel is Hurricane Season, again a standalone title.

This, like Glory Road, is a clean read of Christian romance. There are no “sex” scenes in it. The language is smooth and completely harmless. For those who are fans of “clean” romance novels, this one definitely fits into that category. As a note, I haven’t read Hurricane Season yet, but it’s on my TBR (To-Be-Read) list.
