In The Whistler, Lacy Stoltz investigates a corrupt judge who accepted millions of dollars in bribes from a crime syndicate. She took the criminals away, but only after being attacked and nearly killed. Three years later and approaching forty, she is tired of working for the Florida Board of Judicial Conduct and is ready for a change.

She then meets a mysterious woman who is so terrified that she uses a variety of aliases. Jeri Crosby’s father was murdered twenty years earlier in a case that remains unsolved and has gone cold as a stone. But Jeri has a suspect she has become obsessed with and has been following for two decades. Along the way, she discovered more victims.

Suspicion is easy enough, but proof seems impossible. The man is very brilliant, patient, and also always one step ahead of law enforcement. He is the most cunning of all the serial killers. He is knowledgeable about forensics, police procedures, and most importantly, the law.

Ever a fan of John Grisham’s work, I eagerly sought out this book. As usual, Grisham excels at using the law as a backdrop, keeping the reader focused on the case of a criminally responsible and corrupt judge without revealing too much at once. Grisham’s work continues to be top notch and I’m excited to see if there is more to this series as the ending leaves things slightly open for interpretation.

Lacy Stoltz has a long history of getting to the bottom of the truth and making tough decisions, never more so than when she was investigating members of the judiciary. Lacy, who was nearly killed by her efforts during a recent case, has never shied away from bringing justice to light while maintaining her role on the Florida Board of Judicial Conduct.

At her job, Lacy meets Jeri Crosby, a woman so scared that she tries to hide her identity as best she can. The murder of Jeri’s father remains a cold case two decades after it happened, having lost everyone who defended the victim. Jeri is sure others have missed something, especially when two more victims turn up, though a killer has yet to be found.

Jeri is not pointing the finger at a known criminal, but at a practicing Florida judge. As Lacy listens, she learns that Jeri has been collecting evidence for years and believes that she connected some random evidence. However, this is not a simple warrant case, but one in which one of the most powerful judicial authorities in the country must be held accountable for her apparent actions. Lacy is ready to act, but she must do so with caution or fear a backlash like no other.

On the other side of the coin is the judge, whose tricks are those of a stealthy serial killer who is always one step ahead of those responsible. He has a list of victims and motives to further his actions, though much of this is unknown to the public.

As the murders pile up, Lacy must not only catch him, but also prove that he, a hero of justice, could have committed all those heinous crimes. He will require cunning and patience, but if he doesn’t back down, Lacy will surely put herself on that list and die to prevent the realization of him. Grisham at his best with a disturbing twist that will impress many who enjoy this type of story.

I have long enjoyed stories of John Grisham mixing the law with some sort of moral cause. His novels tend to rip the reader out of his comfort zone and leave an indelible mark on his psyche, leaving him with no turning back. In this work, Grisham mixes legal issues with a criminal game of cat and mouse in which there can only be one winner. All this while he gives the reader a front row seat to all the action.

As with some of his best novels, Grisham uses a strong narrative to develop the themes established at the beginning of the story. The roadmap for the work may not be as straightforward as some would like it to be, but it is quick and promising from the start. Strong characters, both likeable and despised, appear throughout the pages of the story, providing the glue to hold things together. Grisham keeps adding plot twists to keep the reader, who knows the killer from the first few pages, from getting too comfortable.

In a sequel that begs for more, Grisham has readers wondering if there’s more to be said for Lacy Stoltz, whose personal life is also shown in full. Grisham is less of a legal thriller than a crime one, displaying versatility and solid writing that will impress many who take the time to explore this book, as well as the two companion texts in the series.

Congratulations to Mr. Grisham on a successful launch that is sure to keep fans of his happy. I’m curious to see what else you’ve been working on lately.
