It’s 2 am On a Saturday afternoon in the spring of 2001, 28-year-old Cecily Gardner sits alone in a bar in New York’s East Village, questioning her life. Feeling lonely and homesick for the Midwest, she wonders if she’ll ever make it as a big-city reporter, and if she made a terrible mistake breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, Matthew.

As Cecily picks up the phone to call him, she hears a guy on the bar stool next to her say, “Don’t, you’ll be sorry.” Something tells him to listen, and in the next few hours—and tequila, shots—the two forge an unlikely bond.

It should be, they both decide the next morning, when Cecily remembers the dangers of a rebound relationship. Plus, the timing couldn’t be worse: Grant is preparing to quit his job and move abroad. But despite all their obstacles, they can’t seem to say goodbye, and for the first time in her carefully constructed life, Cecily follows her heart instead of her head.

Grant then disappears in the chaos of 9/11. Fearing the worst, Cecily sees his face on a missing persons poster and realizes she’s not the only one looking for him. Her investigative journalistic instinct kicks in when she vows to uncover the truth. But the questions quickly mount: How well did he really know Grant? Has he ever truly loved her? And is it possible to love a man who was not who she seemed to be?

The Lies That Bind is a riveting and emotionally resonant exploration of the never-ending search for love and truth, in our relationships, our careers, and deep within our own hearts.

There are so many hoaxes in this book that I hardly know where to start. Cecily Gardner, 28, who has just broken up with her longtime boyfriend, meets Grant at a bar and they hit it off right away. Things are so good that nobody can believe what is happening and they are moving fast. Then the tragedy of 9/11 occurs and Grant is one of the many victims.

Cecily, a reporter, sets out to interview friends, family and witnesses to the tragedy as she searches for Grant or something about him. She eventually comes across a poster with her picture posted by her wife Amy. At first, she is surprised to learn that he is or was married. However, her curiosity leads her to visit Amy to talk about Grant, without admitting that she had an affair with the woman’s now-deceased husband. Around the same time, Cecily also reconciles with her ex and they resume their relationship.

Things are moving fast again, and before Cecily or her ex knows it, they’re engaged and preparing for a wedding. However, the mysteries keep coming up, complicating things more and more until they nearly consume and overwhelm Cecily and everyone else in the story.

This is a strange book with a strange and tangled web of intrigue that engulfs the reader almost from the start. I liked the main characters, all except Amy, who seemed distant and condescending. Cecily and her fiancé seemed sincere, although I blamed Cecily for hiding the truth from her so much to the point that she couldn’t take it anymore.

Her fiancé, although a bit overbearing and controlling, seemed the better and more logical of the two. Cecily had two girlfriends in the story who played an important role in being her sounding board and providing advice when she needed or sought it. She talked a little too much with her gay boyfriend Scott, but he kept her grounded. He really entered Cecily’s life and mind more than I thought was realistic. I thought the other friend of hers was a slightly more realistic friend.

As I said before, the story is built on hoaxes, hoaxes, and more hoaxes, each one more complicated and confusing than the last. The story is interesting and shows how lies can build up until they take control. I’m not sure what genre I would place this book in as it fits several (eg crime, romance, etc.) but none in particular. Still, the story is well done and flows well, making it an easy read. Got this from NetGalley to read and review.
