The Measure is a seductive contemporary novel of soft literary fiction set in an alternate reality (i.e. non-pandemic) version of near-future New York, about how each person’s sudden discovery of how much time remains to live changes their decisions determined. in life, love and everything. Plus. It’s a smart idea and would be a great choice for book clubs.

On a normal day in March, without warning, everyone over the age of 22 is given a small wooden box with a single piece of string attached. There is much speculation as to how this was accomplished and by whom, but what is clear is that the length of the rope represents that person’s lifeline. As time passes and people begin to die as prophesied, it becomes clear that fate has no catch. Eight people from different backgrounds must face the consequences of this new knowledge as their lives are intertwined, but will it ruin their lives or set them free?

First a warning: if you are reading this book out of curiosity about the mystery of the strings and hoping for an intelligent answer, supernatural or otherwise, forget it, it will never be explained. Instead, it’s about how the world changes irrevocably, and yet life goes on. There are obvious parallels to the pandemic and in particular the way the population is splitting into two, short and long chains and the impact this is having on people’s lives, careers and relationships as this human behavior is depressingly predictable. Of course, the majority find ways to demonize the minority.

I liked the way we gradually got to know each of the eight central characters, most of them likable, but there’s a lot of love-hate relationship between Anthony, the obnoxious Republican, and his vain, shallow wife.

I liked Anthony’s conflicted nephew Jack and honorable best friend Javier, and loved serious architect Ben and brave ED Doc Hank. The female characters were interesting as they showed the most development and their stories were more emotional. I particularly enjoyed the subtle connections between the supporting characters throughout the book, which showed how connected we all are, but you have to be careful. Obviously not all endings will be happy with this premise, but the author closes the arc of all in a satisfying way.

The Measure presents a simple act of knowing in such a profound way. One day everyone over twenty-two wakes up and is given a rope, a rope that tells them how long their life is going to be. While this concept may seem a bit cheesy, the implication it shows for people to know their life span unfolds in unexpected and expected ways. Perhaps I’m more than a little disillusioned with today’s society, so it was easy to anticipate all the ill effects to come. The long-stringers are beginning to distance themselves from the short-stringers. A politician sees his long list as an opportunity to stir up fear, create dissent, and of course his own approval ratings.

People start to see their relationships and decisions in different ways. Should a couple stay together if one has the short thread and the other has the long thread? Should someone be prevented from realizing their dream because of a short rope? Should someone choose not to have children because they know they won’t be there to see them grow up?

These are all questions that the various narrators of the story must and must ask themselves. It’s easy to look down a long rope and think it’s okay to be reckless because it looks like you’re going to survive. But it’s also pretty amazing to remember that a short life can have a huge impact. There are also characters in the book who never want to know the length of their chain, including Amie, one of the narrators. Why? Why know your life is destined no matter what you do?

After losing one of the most important people in my life to a short life, the thought of knowing that life might be short is unbearable, but it also means living your life with purpose and no regrets. The most important lesson of this book for me is that if you have had the opportunity to know how long your life is going to be, it should be your choice to know or not, and live your life to the fullest, no matter how long it takes time . be his I really loved this book and the messages it sends out. It’s one of my favorite books this year!

Erlick doesn’t hesitate to show the problems that arise (and discrimination is inevitable when you can divide the world into haves and have-nots) and the positives that exist when you choose to see them.
