THE MOTHERS is about friendship as a substitute for family, community leaders who judge when they are no better than those who despise them, who covet what others have but at what cost, are unfaithful and seek honesty, a city like any other where gossip abounds, remorse for what might have been, and an attempt to right sins with the best of intentions. It is about love and forgiveness or trying to forgive.

He was so invested in the characters. Not only the three main characters, but also the father of the protagonist and the parents of her love interest. There are some minor characters that appear later in the book that amused me and reminded me of a game of telephone and I could almost imagine them sitting like birds on a telephone line and singing to each other.

The book is sad, painful and sometimes hopeful. Above all, Bennett shows us that there are many kinds of mothers and that you don’t necessarily have to be a mother to be a mother.
