On a beautiful summer night in a charming English suburb, a young woman and her boyfriend disappear after a party at the huge country mansion of a new college friend.

A year later, a writer moves to a country house at the edge of the forest that borders the same property. The dense forest known locally as the Dark Place is the author’s favorite place for long walks, and on one of those walks she comes across a mysterious note that simply reads, “DIG HERE.”

Could this be a clue to what happened to the missing young couple? And really what exactly is buried in this haunted ground?

In 2017, 19-year-old Tallulah and her boyfriend Zach head out for a much-needed night out. They leave her 1 year old son with her mother (Kim) but never come back. The next morning, Kim calls to see if anyone knows where they are. Kim finds out that they went to a party at a friend’s house named Scarlet. When Kim checks to see if Tallulah and Zach are still there, she is told that they left around 1:00 AM. Kim now decides it’s time to call the police, but the police investigation can’t find any sign of them and the case is frozen.

In 2019, Sophie moves to the city with her boyfriend, who is now the new director of a boarding school. Sophie is a mystery writer and one day she sees a sign in her yard that says “Dig Here” and what she finds will reopen the Tallulah missing persons case.

This book is told in a dual timeline and I was delighted to see how we see the events leading up to what happened to Tallulah and Zach, as well as the new research and new evidence that is found.

She loved and had a lot of sympathy for Kim and Tallulah. Kim is so heartbroken over Tallulah’s disappearance and she will do whatever it takes to find out what happened. And she also has to stick together because she’s now taking care of Tallulah’s son, Noah. And her just reading everything that Tallulah was going through in her life. She is a great mother to Noah and she loves him very much, but things in her personal life have left her very confused and frustrated.

I really liked the 2019 timeline. I didn’t really have strong feelings for Sophie, I liked her, but I was more interested in the new evidence that was coming out and trying to figure out what happened that night 2 years ago.

The book started out a bit slow for me. It probably took me about a quarter to really get into it. But when I did, I couldn’t stop turning the pages until I found out what happened. This book is full of twists and a great mix of characters. This is one of my favorite Lisa Jewell books and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

In an English suburb, near the edge of the woods, there is a large estate. Tallulah, a young mother, goes missing after attending a party with college friends. Her mother Kim never gives up hope as she takes care of her little grandson. An author (Sophie) begins to investigate when she sees a sinister sign that reads “Dig Here.” She ponders this clue and wonders if it is related to the missing woman. She won’t stop until she gets answers.

A riveting thriller that progresses at a steady pace. Narrated in three voices by; Tallulah, Kim and Sophie (also) alternate years, 2017 the year of her disappearance and 2018 the present. With attention to detail, engaging prose, and engaging characters, it wowed me from page one to the end. Overall, I found The Night She Disappeared entertaining and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a great physiological thriller.
