Tennant and Sophie Riggin, daughters of survivors living in a remote and isolated Oregon town, were out the day the vibration and noise began. The screams, the noise, the terror, the blood coming out of her ears, eyes etc. Her father brought her to the shelter with her dog Zeke for safety and when they leave the shelter everything has changed, there is no one in sight, her town is destroyed and Sophie is acting nothing like herself. Tennant decides to move to another place of residence if the noise or vibrations return.

What’s happening? What is the cause of the noise? What word does Sophie keep saying? How can Tennant help his sister? Where have they all gone? Where’s Mama? Where is Dad?

A group of elite government investigators are brought in to investigate. On the team is Dr. Martha Chan, a psychologist who deals with long-term medical emergencies. she studies them. Another member of the team is Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Fraser, a career military leader who distrusts civilians. He is sent to contain them.

The noise continues and spreads across the Pacific Northwest, things spiral out of control. But how to study and hold back if you do not understand what and why caused this “noise”? How can you stop something you’re fighting with every fiber of your being?

There are multiple viewpoints told in this book and there are many supporting characters as well. Readers will learn things as they do in the book. I liked feeling nervous and confused because I don’t know what’s going on. To me, this book is scarier than “true” horror, which makes the book more compelling in many ways.

This is a book that has had reviews everywhere. I loved the originality of this book and yet it reminded me of other books because of the dystopian feel it has. I had the flashes of The Stand, The Walking Dead, and even I Am Legend while reading this. Not that the plot of this book is like one of those (it’s not!), but part of this book brought it to mind.

This book is very imaginative and I think this book would make an amazing movie! I could see him playing in my head. In this book was everything but the kitchen sink! It’s part sci-fi, part dystopian, and, as I mentioned, terrifying.

My only issue with the book is that I didn’t connect with any of the characters. I speculate that so much time, thought, and effort went into the plot, plot execution, pacing, action, and “noise” that the characters needed a second reckoning. “Noise” is a HUGE character in this book and the others pale in comparison.

But I can’t deny that the plot execution was brilliant. I feel that most of the credit for this goes to Barker. I can say that this is a book, I enjoyed it more after sitting down and thinking about it. Very creative and well thought out. Once again, I feel like this is all Barker.

The ending was interesting… I wasn’t sure what I thought at first. To be honest, I still don’t know what to think of it. I have J.D. always devoured. Barker and I like James Pattersons. This collaboration was nice, but didn’t grab me as much as their previous collaboration. Again, I think that’s because I didn’t really get into the characters too much.

I look forward to your next collaboration and individual work.
