It’s wedding season in Nantucket, aka summer: the sight of a bride running down Main Street is as commonplace as the sunset on Madaket Beach. The Otis Winbury wedding promises to be one to remember: the groom’s wealthy parents spared no expense in throwing a lavish ceremony at their waterfront estate.
But after the tragedy, it will be memorable for all the wrong reasons: just hours before the ceremony, a body is discovered in Nantucket Harbor and everyone in the wedding party is suddenly a suspect. When Police Chief Ed Kapenash interviews the bride, the groom, the groom’s famous crime writer and even a member of his own family, he discovers that every wedding is a minefield and no couple is perfect.
Featuring well-loved characters from The Castaways, Beautiful Day and A Summer Affair, The Perfect Couple proves once again that Elin Hilderbrand is the queen of summertime beach reading.

My Thoughts: Set against the beautiful fairytale setting of Nantucket, The Perfect Couple offers romantic moments and promises a happy ending.
But for the newlyweds, the promises don’t go as planned. We slip back and forth in time and learn the secrets behind the facades of the wealthy Winbury family, only gradually realizing what Celeste Otis wants and needs as the wedding date approaches. His true heart will be revealed when the time to exchange vows runs out. Then tragedy throws everyone off course, and amidst the chaos a self-examination must take place.
What makes a couple happily ever after? Based on what she sees between her parents, the original “perfect couple”, will Celeste’s dreams of perfection lead her to her true love? Or will the circumstances of the Winbury family’s wealth and privilege disorient them and force them to focus on safety and comfort? How does a last-minute attraction get them off track? Will she admit her true feelings before it’s too late?
Solving the mystery of the corpse in the harbor keeps everyone a little perplexed all the time. Meanwhile, the vision of a perfect match and what she looks like haunts each of the characters. To tease them, to remind them what others have and what they somehow miss. In the end the answers come, but they seem sad and disappointing.
The perfect pair had so many components that I enjoyed. I loved that there was a mystery surrounding the maid of honor’s death. The Who Done It kept me busy. There were so many possibilities, although I ruled out a group of suspects from the first few chapters. I had a pretty good idea who was to blame, but ended up enjoying the delivery.
Let me tell you what the book is about:
Celeste Otis marries Benji Winbury. This will be the wedding of the year. The wedding takes place in Nantucket, where Benji’s parents, Tag and Greer Winbury, live.
Celeste is quite young woman who works at the zoo. He met Benji when he was taking his girlfriend and son to a snake show. Subsequently, Benji broke up with his girlfriend and began dating Celeste.
Benji’s parents come from money. His mother Greer is a famous crime writer. His father is a successful businessman. Celeste’s parents, Karen and Bruce Otis, are not rich. Karen is also battling terminal cancer and hopes her only daughter will get married before the disease separates her from her family.
On the day of the wedding, the body of Celeste’s best friend and bridesmaid, Merritt Monaco, is found, and since every family member has secrets, it’s up to Chief Ed Kapenash and Nick Diamantopoulos of the Nantucket Police Department to find out if what it was was an accident or someone did this to merritt.
Elin Hilderbrand takes you through the events that take place months before the wedding from the perspective of various characters. The web of lies, deceit, seduction and death is something you don’t want to miss.
My only objection to the story is that I felt Merritt’s death was an injustice. I would have wished for a harsher punishment for the perpetrator and a more thorough police investigation. Somehow I felt like they lost the ball at the end.
