This is a psychological thriller that definitely made me turn the pages, but I have to admit a certain disappointment. The book begins with an excerpt of the protagonist Erica (the mother) and the police. Erica claims that she killed him and that she would do it again so he can’t hurt anyone.

From the description in the book, we know that the focus of the story is his son Liam and his involvement. Almost immediately, she is told by the mother’s words that she is worried about her son’s potential sociopath, and when a girl disappears, she believes her son did it…

SPOILER:

Honestly at this point I am sure that Liam committed the murder and eventually the mother kills him to stop the murder… Everything points to Liam…

When the kidnapped girl’s kidnapper (Olivia) first opens the door, Olivia encounters him AND thinks in her head “I knew I should have listened to Madison” (her best friend who warned her not to date Liam. .. However, you also learn that Tyler (formerly Liam’s best friend) was very jealous that Olivia didn’t date him… so you misunderstand some plot instructions…

The letter also implied that Liam came home immediately after his mother called him when he was with Olivia… (when she was allegedly kidnapped), which again makes you somewhat doubt your assumption…

Ultimately, my biggest problem with this novel is that at the end you learned that he was the father all along. The reason I’m frustrated with this is because the author claimed Olivia knew her kidnapper. Yes, she might have known and then you find out she didn’t know her father, but she also repeatedly thought that she should have listened to Madison and never gotten involved with Liam…some might like that twist.

I feel like after reading many psychological thrillers the author tricks your mind into forming an incorrect assumption based on your perception of what you are reading. In this case, the author actually claims that Olivia regrets her interactions with Liam by making you believe that she is Liam…

The Perfect Son is definitely a psychological thriller. McFadden takes you through her character Erika into the domesticated life of the suburbs. Erika’s narration is primary and you get to know the other characters through their first-person narration. It’s hard to share my opinion and not risk spoiling the story! But here it goes.

I was immediately a little annoyed at how daring it was to tell Erika about her son Liam. Nothing was saved in a way that made it seem like the book was becoming too predictable. However, I stuck with it because it spoke to me enough to make me wonder what would happen to some of the characters. I’m glad I kept the book. McFadden has a great way of shaking up a story when you least expect it!

Erika and Jason Cass, normal family: 1 boy and 1 girl. Almost as close to pickets as on the surface, but he’s still digging and there’s no telling what he might dig up. A girl goes missing and turns out to be Liam’s crush. As the police search, they delve deep into the family, and layer by layer, person by person, more questions seem to emerge than answers. Liam was too easy… right? The name of the book, the proclivities of the police, even the mother questioning “her favorite son” take him on a journey, down a path. But where does it lead? It can’t be my face, can it?
