Oh autumn. Mist season and mild fertility. Back at school, the weather starts to take a turn for the worse, boots and coats are being pulled out of the closet, leaves are turning color, and… it’s time for a new John Grisham release. He always compares this time of year to the time to get another one of his book. I always have them on pre-order now so I get them the day they come out because I love his books. Always an intriguing and compelling mix of suspense and legal conundrum, his book is guaranteed to keep me glued to the pages from start to finish. I usually devour them once they are out.

So imagine my surprise when, while waiting for his new book The Reckoning to be published, I realized I hadn’t read last year’s publication The Rooster Bar. How did this happen? I can’t imagine my memory being like a colander these days (I owe it to my age and hormones. In fact, I may have read it and forgotten it, it’s gotten so bad). Anyway, happy days: I now had another unread John Grisham to enjoy on my recent vacation.

I’m always fascinated by where writers get their ideas for novels, and there’s an interesting note at the end of this book where Grisham reveals that the idea for this novel came from an article he wrote about student debt in America. . assumptions to get through law school. How it goes from being a fairly boring article, especially for non-lawyers, to a harrowing thriller is in the nature of its brilliance as it somehow manages to turn it into one of its classic stories that has kept me on my toes. late in desperation to reach the end.

The plot of this book is pretty outrageous and I think you’ll have to break your disbelief to get into it, but that’s true of most thrillers, which are inherently outlandish and push the boundaries of the probable. These books are pure escapism, sometimes retaining only a tenuous sense of reality, and I’m sure the US court system would be outraged if they believed this could happen (although now I’m waiting for someone to tell me that it is fact.)

Anyway, probability aside, the plot is original and compelling and an interesting twist on the “hero” and “villain” roles as the leads actually break the law, but we still end up breaking them , despite the fact that they represent a threat to the future of their clients, because in some way they themselves are victims. Should they get away with it? Is it just what is happening to them? I don’t want to spoil anything by revealing my thoughts, but I think you’ll find more food for thought in these books than Grisham is often given credit for.

In the past, when I’ve shown people that I’m a big fan of John Grisham’s books, I’ve been met with literary snobbery, especially from people who had never read any of his books. Well, first I would like to ask if you can form a valid opinion of an author without reading a word of what he has written. Second, you don’t sell as many books as John Grisham without knowing how to write. He is a master at creating a tight, suspenseful and engaging thriller and this one is no exception. I thoroughly enjoyed it as usual and can’t wait to read his new book.
