Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie born on June 19, year 1947 is an Indian-born British-American writer. Often blending magical realism with historical fiction, his work deals primarily with the connections, divisions, and migrations between Eastern and Western civilizations settled in the Indian subcontinent.
Rushdie’s second novel, Midnight’s Children (1981), won the 1981 Booker Prize and was twice named “Best Novel of All Winners” on the 25th and 40th anniversaries of the award. I finally got to the Satanic Verses. You just have to read a book that has a death sentence on the author. After Ayatollah Khomeini issued the fatwa calling for Salmon Rushdie’s death, Rushdie’s Japanese translator was killed, his Italian translator and Norwegian editor were stabbed (not killed) and his Turkish translator ducked, but the scoundrels set fire to his hotel. and killed 37 non-fatwa people. Assuming it was culturally rich, I attended two lecture series on Islam to help me understand at least some of the darkness. However, I’m sure I missed a lot. It’s culturally rich, ok, but more into Indian culture than Islamic, and I haven’t attended any Indian conferences.
There are two main characters in the book: Gibreel Farishta and Saladin Chamcha. They’re both more or less self-made guys who have found some success in the entertainment industry. Gibreel in films, a regular heartthrob, and Saladino in voice acting, where his specialty is high-quality English diction. Saladin hates being Indian and has decided his heart belongs to England and his cruelly unfaithful last wife, wait Pamela (is that English or what?).
The two (Saladin and Gibreel) meet on a flight from India to England, which is first hijacked and then flown to cruising altitude, where the two fight on the long journey to Earth, which is cut short by his survival of all things from the Autumn (it is instructive to note that during the nosedive, Saladin uses some of his seemingly limited time by singing Rule Britannia). Things are changing, you could say.
About fourteen centuries earlier we are introduced to Mahound (I have to understand that it is disrespectful to call the Prophet Muhammad that way) who is in the process of trying to convert the polytheistic Arabs of Jahilia. What? I thought it was Mecca. Well it’s deep, see? Jahilia is apparently an Arabic term meaning “ignorance of the will of God” and describes the condition of the Meccans before conversion, I suppose.
Things aren’t going well. Muhammad is about to receive the Holy Qur’an from God through the angel Gabriel (Arabic for “Gibreel”. See where this is going?) while at the same time preaching monotheism with limited success. The temptation arises when the supreme sultan (or something like that) asks Muhammad to spare a few, just three, of the three hundred and sixty gods in order to please the ruler’s wife, whose family is in charge of the temples of the three gods. female and receives money during the time.
