I live in a world without magic or the miracles. A place where there are no psychics or shapeshifters, no angels or superhuman children to save you. A place where people die and music dissolves and things suck. I am so grounded by the weight of reality that some days I wonder how I can keep picking up my feet to walk.

Two and a half years after an unspeakable tragedy left a shadow of the girl she once was, Nastya Kashnikov moves to a new city, determined to hide her dark past and keep everyone at a distance. But her plans only last until she finds herself inexplicably drawn to someone just as isolated as herself: Josh Bennett.

Josh’s story is no secret. Every person he loves has been eliminated from her life until at the age of seventeen there are none left. When your name is synonymous with the death, everyone really tends to give you your space. Everyone except Nastya, who won’t leave until she breaks into every aspect of her life. But as the undeniable attraction between them grows, he begins to wonder if he’ll ever know the secrets she’s hiding, or even if he wants to know.

Calm Sea is a rich, intense, and brilliantly crafted story about a lonely boy, an emotionally fragile girl, and the miracle of a second chance.

Nastya Kashnikov lurks in the shadows of humanity; He dresses his body in his black and covers his face with dark makeup over translucent skin, and doesn’t speak… to anyone!

However, Nastya was not always like this. She was a well-known local girl from ‘Brighton’ and she had a talent that defied beauty. But one day, when she was fifteen, everything she loved, everything she had worked so hard for, was taken from her in a moment of sheer brutality so profound that all that was left of Nastya was a shell of her former self.

Now that she is approaching eighteen, Ella Nastya has moved out of her hometown to escape the horrors of her past and moved in with her supportive aunt, a two hour drive away. After a year or two of homeschooling, she decided that going back to high school is not only a necessity, but a requirement for graduation.

Touted as the new “ghost” at school, she attracts some unwanted attention until one day a boy steps in to help her: that boy is Josh, a lonely student sitting alone, a hidden force field intact and keeping everything under control at his command. around. . Having endured her own share of agony from the past, she sees the girl behind the facade, knows the pain that lies in her dark, painted eyes, and even if she doesn’t understand it, deep down she knows this girl is like the. Broken.

Josh just wants to build furniture, so every night he spends valuable hours in her garage workshop working on her next project until he sees her one night. Drenched in sweat, legs spread, forehead in agony, he offers to drive her home; after all, what’s a girl doing running through the streets at midnight?

As days turn into weeks and weeks into months, Josh and Nastya form an unlikely friendship. Quietly reveling in each other’s company isn’t usually the norm, but it’s something you’re both comfortable with. But Josh wants to meet this girl, and Nastya can’t help but feel connected to the guy in front of her, but to find out more about her, she must break her only rule, her only vow: her silence.

Katja Millay is a genius – DONE! <— Ugh, you don’t hate it when people do that, but I’m sorry I felt the need to break my own rule because I can’t stress how beautiful her talent is. Her writing flows like poetry. Your words a lament. Your voice a symphony.

This book was a slow but enjoyable read at the same time. He wasn’t “too” scared, although he felt like crying sometimes. The author didn’t add extra drama just because. Each scene tied into the last without too many time jumps, giving the characters time to develop. I loved seeing Nastya gradually emerge from the darkness, and the fact that she was a long time coming made this story what it was: believable.

The last quarter of this story was well worth the wait and time investment, making this a true book trip.

Josh and Drew, oh what can I say about these beautiful boys other than be prepared to fall in love with both of them in a very different way. Every girl needs a rock; Nastya gets two! 😉

So I guess it goes without saying that I loved this book! The ending was just perfect. I love the ending and this book definitely delivered.
