In the early morning hours of a summer, a young woman stands in the lane of an oncoming bus. A tragic accident? Or suicide?

At the heart of this mystery is Adrian Wolfe, a prolific architect and grieving widower who begins to investigate the cause a year after the death of his third wife. As Adrian looks back on his short but seemingly happy marriage, disturbing secrets surface. The divorces of his two previous wives had been amicable, or so it seemed; his children, all five, were as resilient as ever, he thought. But something or maybe someone must have pushed Maya over the edge.

British author Lisa Jewell has once again given a thumbs up to today’s marriages, relationships and blended families in her latest complex and emotional psychological thriller, THE THIRD WIFE.

Three women have one thing in common: Adrian Wolfe, a man, father, current husband and ex-husband to two different women, and five children between two of the ex-wives.

Adrian, aged fifty, an accomplished architect, married to this third wife Maya, childless, has now lost his wife when she stepped in front of a London bus and died. Oddly enough, it was late at night and she was drunk. Why was she drunk at this late hour? Suicide or Accident? Was she going through something or worried in any way; Maybe he hid his problems from his family?

Now, a year after Maya’s mysterious death, Adrian wonders what really happened to his wife. He begins to retrace the days leading up to the event, trying to piece together the pieces of the puzzle that will help him understand what his wife may have experienced that led to such devastation.

As the book opens, Adrian places an advertisement around town and in the newspapers to find a new home for Maya’s cat, Billie. Seeing Jane place the ad and pretending to love the cat, this mysterious woman begins visiting Adrian’s house. She seems to be a stalker. How does this woman fit into the mystery? Adrian has always found some fault in all his wives and immediately finds a small one in Jane; however, he is in love with her. Meanwhile, Adrian finds a series of disturbing emails on Maya’s computer.

As we hear from different angles, we find that Adrian thinks they are all a happy family. But are they really? Susie, his first wife who lives in the country and mother to Cat, and Luke, both in their twenties (these two are not that easy). Adrian left his first family for the glamorous Caroline, who lives in a beautiful townhouse in the city with three children under the age of 12: Beau, Pearl and Otis. Believe it or not, they all spend the holidays together and share custody.

As Adrian begins to sink into Maya’s death, things aren’t as perfect as he thought. To further increase the intensity and also the complexity, we start to hear from Maya’s point of view. How hard it was not having children and being part of this overwhelming family. More hidden secrets are uncovered and Adrian is sure that this stalker, Jane, might be connected in some way.

As the tension builds, Jewell is a master at creating gripping psychological family drama, blending the past with the present to create a mysterious and timely portrayal of today’s blended family unit. A realistic exploration of the complexities and emotions of modern families.

I can relate to the story as I have been a first wife, second wife, ex-wife (I never want to be a third wife) and happily divorced for over twenty five years; a mother of two and former stepmother of three, all of whom lived with us (all the children were under 15 when we married). There is no end to the daily complications when so many people are emotionally connected.

Fans of psychological suspense, mystery, women’s fiction, women’s fiction, and family drama, as well as those who enjoy authors Amy Hatvany, Sarah Pekkanen, Jane Green, Liane Moriarty, and Jojo Moyes, will appreciate the intelligent writing and deft Lisa. as it handles multiple perspectives with ease.

If you enjoyed the THIRD WIFE, I recommend The House We Grew Up In, another Jewell winner.
