Decades ago, in the small town of Fogg Lake, the incident happened: an explosion in the cave system that released unknown gases. Residents slept for two days. When they woke up they found things had changed, they had changed. Some started having visions. Others heard menacing voices.

And then the scientists from a mysterious government agency arrived. Determined not to become subjects in bizarre experiments, the residents of Fogg Lake blamed food poisoning for their “hallucinations,” and the story worked. But now it’s become clear that the chilling effects of The Incident are showing up in Fogg Lake’s offspring…

Catalina Lark and Olivia LeClair, best friends and co-owners of a Seattle detective firm, use what they call their “different perspective” to help solve cases. When Olivia suddenly disappears one night, Cat begins a desperate search for her friend. No one takes the disappearance seriously except for Slater Arganbright, an agent for a shadowy organization known only as the Foundation, who shows up at your company with a cryptic warning.

A ruthless killer searches for the only witnesses to a murder that took place fifteen years ago in the Fogg Lake Caverns: Catalina and Olivia. And someone intends to make both women disappear.

Determined not to become subjects in bizarre experiments, the residents of Fogg Lake blamed food poisoning for their “hallucinations,” and the story worked. But now it’s become clear that the chilling effects of The Incident are showing up in Fogg Lake’s offspring…

My thoughts:

We first meet Catalina and Olivia as they stumble across the caves and witness a murder. The blast that changed them forever will have them join the townsfolk in blaming the side effects of food poisoning, and it will be years before they realize the visions they see are actually useful and can help them solve cases. Her investigation gets personal when Olivia is snatched off the street by the notorious members of a group known as the Vortex.

As Catalina follows the clues, she literally meets Slater Arganbright, a Foundation member, and together they search for Olivia… and connect in interesting ways.

Finding the truth about the caves and that murder long ago will finally protect them and help the residents of Fogg Lake.

The Vanishing is an interesting story that will become an ongoing quest in this new series. 4 stars

FINAL DECISION: Most of my favorite Krentz books have the paranormal elements. This book is a Krentz return to romantic suspense with paranormal elements, and this book has an energy that reminds me of some of my favorite books.

THE STORY: Due to an incident years ago, some residents of Fogg Lake have paranormal abilities. Catalina Lark, using her skills in her job as a private investigator, tries to find out what happened to her missing best friend. Catalina eventually joins forces with scientist Slate Trevelyan. Catalina and Slate discover that their friend’s disappearance is linked to a murder she and Catalina think they saw when they were teenagers: the murder nobody believes happens.

OPINION: I really enjoyed it. Catalina and Slate were a good couple and I really liked that the romance in this part was serious and not just a small part of the story. The book has an overall mystery and there is more to be uncovered in future books as to the structure of Krentz’s recent series.

I liked the interaction between Catalina and Slate. They definitely had a northwest character vibe that was cute. I liked these two very much. Krenty definitely knows how to write quirky characters and I liked the quirks of these two. There was plenty of danger and suspense to keep the storyline going.

This was an easy read, and while the immediate mystery has been resolved, it remains more open to the set-up of the series.

WORTH MENTIONING: Lark and Trevelyan are familiar names to Krentz readers. While reading other books by people who are close or distant relatives is entirely unnecessary, it is clear that all of these books are set in the same universe.

CONNECTED BOOKS: THE VANISHING is the 1 book in the Fogg Lake series.
